Description:
HexView has discovered a vulnerability in Info-Zip, which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges.

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error when doing recursive compression of directories with "zip". This can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow when a set of nested overly long directories are compressed during e.g. a backup process.

Successful exploitation may allow execution of arbitrary code with the privileges of the user invoking "zip" depending on the filesystem, where the compression occurs.

NOTE: In some rare situations, this may also be a remote issue, when Info-Zip is used in combination with other applications, which are accessible from remote and compress directories.

The vulnerability has been confirmed in version 2.3 for Linux. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution:
Update to version 2.31.
