Description:
eEye Digital Security has reported some vulnerabilities in Microsoft Windows, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges, or by malicious users to compromise a vulnerable system.

The vulnerabilities are caused due to insecure use of the "wsprintfW()" function in the Plug-and-Play service (umpnpmgr.dll) within the "GetDeviceInstanceListSize()", "GetDeviceInstanceList()", and "GetInstanceList()" functions. This can be exploited to cause stack-based buffer overflows and allows arbitrary code execution with SYSTEM privileges.

On Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP1, the vulnerabilities can be exploited by an authenticated user via a specially crafted network message sent to the UMPNPMGR RPC interface of a vulnerable system. On Windows XP SP2, the vulnerability can only be exploited for local privilege escalation.

Solution:
Apply patches.
