Serendipity Script Insertion and Cross-Site Scripting

Secunia Advisory: SA29128
Release Date: 2008-02-27
Last Update: 2008-03-18

Critical:
Less critical
Impact: Cross Site Scripting
Where: From remote
Solution Status: Partial Fix

Software:Serendipity 1.x

CVE reference:CVE-2008-0124 (Secunia mirror)

Description:
Hanno Boeck has discovered two vulnerabilities in Serendipity, which can be exploited by malicious users to conduct cross-site scripting and script insertion attacks.

1) Input passed to the "realname" parameter in serendipity_admin.php is not properly sanitised before being stored. This can be exploited to insert arbitrary HTML and script code, which is executed in a user's browser session in context of an affected site when the malicious data is viewed.

2) The serendipity_admin.php script fails to completely validate the extension of an uploaded file. This can be exploited to upload files with the ".html" extension, which can then be used for cross-site scripting attacks.

Successful exploitation of both vulnerabilities requires valid user credentials.

The vulnerabilities are confirmed in version 1.2.1. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution:
Only grant access to trusted users.

Update to version 1.3, which fixes vulnerability #1.
