Description:
Multiple vulnerabilities have been reported in the Linux Kernel, which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges or by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) or leak kernel memory. Reportedly, it is currently unclear whether some of the vulnerabilities also can be exploited for arbitrary code execution.

1) Stefan Esser has reported multiple vulnerabilities within the smb filesystem (smbfs) implementation that are caused due to various types of errors when handling server responses.

Successful exploitation requires that a malicious person has control over a smb server or is able to intercept and manipulate traffic.

NOTE: Not all of these vulnerabilities affect both the 2.4 and 2.6 kernels (see the original advisory for more information).

2) Paul Starzetz has reported a vulnerability within the "unix_dgram_recvmsg()" function caused due to missing serialization. This can be exploited to increment arbitrary memory locations in kernel space and may allow local users to execute arbitrary code with escalated privileges.

This vulnerability has been reported in version 2.4.27. Prior versions may also be affected.

Solution:
Linux Kernel 2.4 branch:
Update to version 2.4.28.

Linux Kernel 2.6 branch:
