Description: iDEFENSE has reported a vulnerability in SGI IRIX, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges.
The vulnerability is caused due to a design error in inpview when executing commands specified in the "SUN_TTSESSION_CMD" environment variable. The problem is that the utility doesn't drop its root privileges before executing the commands, which allows execution of arbitrary commands on the system with root privileges.
The vulnerability has been reported in versions 6.5.9 (feature) and 6.5.22 (maintenance). Other versions may also be affected.
Solution: Reportedly, no patch will be issued as the InPerson product is no longer supported.
Grant only trusted users access to affected systems.
Remove the setuid bit from inpview.
Provided and/or discovered by: iDEFENSE Labs
Changelog: 2005-01-19: Added CVE reference.
