Description:
iDEFENSE has reported a vulnerability in AIX, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges.

The vulnerability is caused due to a format string errors in the chdev, mkdev, and rmdev utilities and can be exploited by supplying specially crafted arguments containing format specifiers.

Successful exploitation allows users in the system group to gain root privileges.

The vulnerability affects AIX 5.1, 5.2, and 5.3.

Solution:
Apply efixes:
ftp://aix.software.ibm.com/aix/efixes/security/dev_efix.tar.Z

APARs will also be released to address the vulnerability.
