Description: pokleyzz has reported a vulnerability in Xoops, which potentially can be exploited by malicious users to compromise a vulnerable system.
The vulnerability is caused due to an input validation error in the uploading of custom avatars in "uploader.php". This can be exploited to upload valid image files with arbitrary file extensions (except ".php", ".cgi", ".pl", ".py", and ".asp").
Successful exploitation may allow execution of malicious scripts (e.g. PHP scripts with the ".php3" file extension), but requires that "Allow Custom Avatar Upload" is enabled (not default setting).
The vulnerability has been reported in version 2.0.9.2 and prior.
Solution: The vendor recommends administrators to turn off support for custom avatar uploads in:
System Admin -> Preferences -> User Info Settings -> "Allow Custom Avatar Upload"
The vendor also recommends not allowing non trusted users to upload images through the image manager:
Administration Menu -> System Admin -> Images
Apply patches (see original advisory).
