Description

Some vulnerabilities have been discovered in Ultimate PHP Board, which can be exploited by malicious people to conduct cross-site scripting and script insertion attacks, manipulate sensitive information, and compromise a vulnerable system.

1) Input passed to the "css" parameter in "send.php", "users.php", "top.php" and "main.php", and the "title" parameter in "header.php" isn't properly sanitised before being returned to the user. This can be exploited to execute arbitrary HTML and script code in a user's browser session in context of an affected site.

2) Input passed to the "User-Agent" HTTP header in "index.php" and "register.php" isn't properly sanitised before being logged. This can be exploited to inject arbitrary HTML and script code, which will get executed in an administrator's browser session in context of an affected site when the malicious user data is viewed via the "admin_iplog.php" script.

This is related to:
SA8858

3) Input passed to the "Signature" field in register.php when registering for an account isn't properly sanitised before being stored in a file-based database. This can be exploited to create an administrator account via the "<~>" string.

4) Input passed to the "id" parameter in newpost.php isn't properly sanitised before being used to create files. This can be exploited to create an arbitrary file by appending a null byte on the "id" parameter value.

Successful exploitation requires that "magic_quotes_gpc" is disabled.

5) Input passed to the "id" and "t_id" parameters in close.php and open.php isn't properly sanitised before being used in a "chmod()" call. This can be exploited to set an arbitrary file's file permissions to 0555 or 0666 by appending a null byte on the parameter value.

Successful exploitation requires that "magic_quotes_gpc" is disabled.

6) Input passed when editing configuration settings in the administration section isn't properly sanitised before being stored in a PHP script. This can be exploited to inject and execute arbitrary PHP code via the double quote character.

Successful exploitation requires administrative privileges and that "magic_quotes_gpc" is disabled.

7) Input passed to the "username" parameter in chat/login.php isn't properly sanitised before being stored in chat/text.php. This can be exploited to inject and execute arbitrary PHP code.

The vulnerabilities have been confirmed on a fully patched UPB Gold 1.9.6 installation. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution
Edit the source code to ensure that input is properly sanitised.
