Description: Eric Romang has reported a vulnerability in SILC Server and Toolkit, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to perform certain actions on a vulnerable system with escalated privileges.
The vulnerability is caused due to temporary files being created insecurely in "/tmp" by silcd.c to store server statistics. This can be exploited via symlink attacks to create or overwrite arbitrary files with the privileges of the user running the affected application.
The vulnerability has been reported in SILC Server versions 1.0 and prior, and in SILC Toolkit versions 0.9.12-r3 and prior.
Solution: Grant only trusted users access to affected systems.
Provided and/or discovered by: Eric Romang, ZATAZ Audit.
Changelog: 2005-09-27: Added CVE reference.
