Description:
Marc Schoenefeld has reported a vulnerability in Sun Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service).
The vulnerability is caused due to an unspecified error in the handling of serialized Java objects. This can be exploited to crash the Java Virtual Machine (JVM) via an application deserializing objects from untrusted sources.
The vulnerability has been reported in versions 1.4.2_08, 1.4.2_09, and 1.5.0_05. Prior versions may also be affected.
Solution:
The vulnerability will reportedly be fixed by the vendor in upcoming releases for 1.3.x, 1.4.x, and 1.5.x.
Restrict applications from deserializing objects from untrusted sources.
