Description: Richard Harms has reported a vulnerability in cpio, which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to cause a DoS (Denial of Service).
The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error in the "write_out_header()" function of "copyout.c" when creating the file header. This can be exploited to cause a buffer overflow when the size of the file that is backed up is more than 8 digits long.
Successful exploitation allows malicious users to e.g. disrupt automated backup processes.
The vulnerability has been reported in version 2.6 and affects only the 64-bit platforms.
Solution: Restrict the size of files that users can create on affected systems.
Some Linux vendors have released updated packages.
