Description: Critical Security has discovered a vulnerability in Sami FTP Server, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a vulnerable system.
The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error in the handling of the USER command. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow and allows arbitrary code execution via an overly long username.
Successful exploitation requires that the user clicks on the "Log" tab to view the on-screen server log. However, this is not necessary if the application is already running with the on-screen server log displayed.
The vulnerability has been confirmed in version 2.0.1 and 2.0.2. Other versions may also be affected.
Solution: Filter malicious requests in a proxy or firewall with FTP filtering capabilities.
Provided and/or discovered by: Originally discovered by Critical Security.
Reported in version 2.0.2 by:
Muhammad Ahmed Siddiqui
Changelog: 2006-01-31: Added CVE reference.
2006-05-05: Updated advisory.
