|
Description: Luigi Auriemma has reported some vulnerabilities in Alien Arena 2006 Gold Edition, which can be exploited by malicious users to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) and potentially compromise a vulnerable system.
1) A format string error within the "safe_cprintf()" function in "games/acesrc/acebot_cmds.c" can potentially be exploited to execute arbitrary code by causing the server to send certain specially-crafted message to the client.
2) A boundary error within the "Cmd_Say_f()" function in "source/game/g_cmds.c" can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow via an overly long message sent from the client.
3) The "Com_sprintf()" function in "source/game/q_shared.c" did not terminate the buffer with a NULL byte after calling "strncpy()". This can potentially cause out-of-bounds memory access on certain platforms and can be exploited to crash other clients by using a player with a long skin, weapon, or model name.
Successful exploitation requires that the attacker is able to join the game server.
The vulnerabilities have been reported in version 5.0 and prior.
Solution: The vendor will reported release a fixed version.
Allow only trusted users to join a game server and do not connect to non-trusted game servers.
