CVE reference:CVE-2006-6707

Description:
Parvez Anwar has discovered a vulnerability in NeoTrace Pro and NeoTrace Express, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a user's system.

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error in the NeoTraceExplorer.NeoTraceLoader ActiveX control (NeoTraceExplorer.dll) when constructing the command line used for invoking the NeoTrace application. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow by passing an overly long string (about 500 bytes) as argument to the "TraceTarget()" method.

Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code.

The vulnerability is confirmed in NeoTrace Express 3.25 and NeoTrace Pro/McAfee Visual Trace 3.25. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution:
Remove the affected ActiveX control (this may impact the functionality, but should only prevent the application from being invoked via Internet Explorer).

Provided and/or discovered by:
Parvez Anwar

Changelog:
2006-12-27: Added CVE reference.
