Description:
mu-b has discovered a vulnerability in Mercury Mail Transport System, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a vulnerable system.

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error when processing IMAP continuation data from the client. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow via a specially crafted series of commands and data sent to the IMAP service.

This vulnerability may be related to:
SA22857

Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code.

The vulnerability is reported in version 4.01b and confirmed in version 4.01a. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution:
Restrict access to the IMAP service.
