Description: mu-b has discovered some vulnerabilities in Mercur Messaging 2005, which can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) or to compromise a vulnerable system.
The vulnerabilities are caused due to errors within the IMAP service (MCRIMAP4.EXE) when processing NTLM authentication data. These can be exploited to crash the service or to cause stack-based buffer overflows via a specially crafted NTLM Type3 message.
Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code.
The vulnerabilities are confirmed in version 2005 SP4 (File version 5.0.15.0). Other versions may also be affected.
Solution: Restrict access to the IMAP service.
