Description: Winny Thomas has discovered a vulnerability in Mercur Messaging 2005, which can be exploited by malicious users to compromise a vulnerable system.
The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error within the IMAP service (MCRIMAP4.EXE) when processing arguments passed to the SUBSCRIBE command. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow via a SUBSCRIBE command with an overly long (greater than 260 bytes) argument.
Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code.
The vulnerability is confirmed in version 2005 SP4 (File version 5.0.15.0). Other versions may also be affected.
Solution: Grant only trusted users access to the service.
Provided and/or discovered by: Winny Thomas
Changelog: 2007-03-26: Added CVE reference.
