Description:
Some vulnerabilities have been reported in HP Software Update, which can be exploited by malicious people to overwrite arbitrary files on a user's system or potentially compromise a user's system.

1) An unspecified error can be exploited to execute arbitrary code. No further information is available.

2) The vulnerability is caused due to the HPRulesEngine.ContentCollection.1 ActiveX Control (RulesEngine.dll) including the insecure "SaveToFile()" method, which writes to a file specified as an argument. This can be exploited to overwrite and corrupt arbitrary files on the system in the context of the currently logged-on user.

The vulnerabilities reportedly affect all systems with HP Software Update version 4.000.005.007 and prior on Windows, with vulnerability #2 reported in version 3.0.8.4.

Solution:
Apply HP SoftPaq SP38202 or use HP Software Update (see vendor's advisory for details).
