Description: sipher has reported a vulnerability in user-ppp, which potentially can be exploited by malicious, local users to gain escalated privileges.
The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error within the "command_Expand_Interpret()" function in command.c. This can be exploited to cause a stack-based buffer overflow via a string containing special characters (.e.g '~').
Successful exploitation requires that the attacker has "network" group privileges.
The vulnerability is reported in the user-ppp included in FreeBSD 6.3. Other versions may also be affected.
Solution: Restrict local access to trusted users only.
Provided and/or discovered by: sipher
Changelog: 2008-03-11: Added CVE reference.
