cPanel Cross-Site Request Forgery Vulnerabilities

Secunia Advisory: SA30027
Release Date: 2008-05-01
Last Update: 2008-05-08

Critical:
Less critical
Impact: Cross Site Scripting
Where: From remote
Solution Status: Vendor Workaround

Software:cPanel 11.x

CVE reference:CVE-2008-2043 (Secunia mirror)

Description:
Some vulnerabilities have been reported in cPanel, which can be exploited by malicious people to conduct cross-site request forgery attacks.

The vulnerabilities are caused due to the application allowing users to perform certain actions via HTTP requests without performing any validity checks to verify the request. This can be exploited to e.g. create a new database, add a new mysql user, add a new ftp user, or add a cron entry.

The vulnerabilities are reported in version 11.18.3 build ID 21703. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution:
Do not browse untrusted sites or follow untrusted links while being logged on to the administrative interface.

The vendor has introduced "Tweak Settings" in build ID 23868, which helps mitigate the vulnerabilities, but might break some functionality.
