Description:
securfrog has discovered a vulnerability in XChat, which can be exploited by malicious people to compromise a vulnerable system.

The vulnerability is caused due to an input validation error when handling "ircs" URIs. This can be exploited to e.g. execute arbitrary commands on a vulnerable system via a specially crafted "ircs" URI with a "--command" parameter.

Successful exploitation requires that XChat is running and that the user is tricked into e.g. browsing a malicious website using Internet Explorer.

The vulnerability is confirmed in version 2.8.7b for Windows using Internet Explorer 6. Prior versions may also be affected.

Solution:
Update to version 2.8.7c.
