A vulnerability has been reported in Mktemp, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to perform certain actions with escalated privileges.
The vulnerability is caused due to the application using the current pid (process identifier) to create safe temporary files. This can potentially be exploited to guess the name of temporary files and perform actions with escalated privileges via e.g. symlink attacks.
The vulnerability is reported in version 1.5. Other versions may also be affected.
Solution: Restrict local access to trusted users only.
Provided and/or discovered by: Reported by Dirk Wetter in a Debian bug report.
