Secunia Advisory SA36847

Where:

From local network

Impact:

DoS

Solution Status:

Unpatched

CVE Reference(s):

Description

AbdulAziz Hariri has discovered a vulnerability in BakBone NetVault, which can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service).

The vulnerability is caused due to the npvmgr.exe process passing fields received in network packets to malloc() without checking for overly large values. This can be exploited to crash the service by sending a specially crafted UDP or TCP packet to port 20031.

The vulnerability is confirmed in BakBone NetVault Backup version 8.22 Build 29. Other versions may also be affected.

Solution:
Restrict network access to trusted users only.
