Some vulnerabilities have been reported in Wireshark, which can be exploited by malicious people to cause a DoS (Denial of Service) or compromise a user's system.
The vulnerabilities are caused due to errors within the LWRES dissector, which can be exploited to cause e.g. a stack-based buffer overflow via a specially crafted network packet or by tricking a user into loading a specially crafted capture file.
Successful exploitation allows execution of arbitrary code.
A stack-based buffer overflow is confirmed in version 1.2.5. Other vulnerabilities are also reported in versions 0.9.15 to 1.0.10 and 1.2.0 to 1.2.5.
Note: Additionally, CVE-2009-4377 and CVE-2009-2563 have been fixed in the Wireshark 1.0.11, which have previously been covered in: SA35884 SA37842
Solution: Update to version 1.0.11 or 1.2.6.
