Secunia Advisory SA39155

Where:

Local system

Impact:

Privilege escalation

Solution Status:

Vendor Patch

CVE Reference(s):

Description

Ubuntu has issued an update for emacs22 and emacs23. This fixes a security issue, which can be exploited by malicious, local users to perform certain actions with escalated privileges.

The security issue is caused due to a race condition within the "movemail" utility, which can be exploited to e.g. read or append data to another user's emails via symlink attacks.

Successful exploitation requires that the other user's emails are stored in a group-writable group-"mail" directory.

Solution:
Apply updated packages.
