A security issue has been reported in Microsoft Outlook Express 6, allowing malicious local users to view deleted emails.

The problem is that Outlook Express fails to remove the deleted mails from the "Deleted Items" folder. This allows other users or administrators to view "deleted" emails using a text editor.

This has been confirmed on a fully patched Windows XP SP1 using Outlook Express 6.00.2900.2180. Other versions may also be affected.

NOTE: Even if mails were properly deleted from the "Deleted Items" folder, it would still be possible to retrieve the data using specialised data recovery tools.

Solution
Delete the mail folder file manually or use a third party application to properly erase the data from the disk.
