Description:
A highly critical boundary error has been discovered in the popular open-source Intrusion Detection System (IDS) Snort.

The non-checked buffer exists in the RPC preprocessing code, since Snort does not check the fragmented packet size against the remaining space in the preprocessing buffer.

A malicious person can exploit this by sending specially crafted fragmented RPC packets to an arbitrary system on a network monitored by Snort resulting in a buffer overflow.

Successful exploitation does not generate any log entries and allows execution of arbitrary code on the IDS with the same privileges as Snort (often "root").

It has furthermore been reported that protection mechanisms such as implementation of a non-executable stack do not offer any protection from exploitation of this vulnerability.
