A vulnerability was reported in Snort, which could be exploited by a malicious person to execute arbitrary code on the system running Snort.

The problem is that it is possible to overflow a 32 bit integer value by sending fragmented TCP packets with malicious sequence numbers. The heap overflow which is caused can reportedly be exploited to execute arbitrary code.

The vulnerability is in the stream4 preprocessor, which reassembles fragmented TCP streams.

Snort versions 1.8, 1.9 and Snort 2.0 prior to RC1 are vulnerable.

Solution
Snort version 2.0 is not vulnerable.
