Description

A vulnerability has been identified in Internet Explorer, which can be exploited by a malicious person to bypass certain security restrictions in a user's browser making it possible to compromise the system.

It is possible to force a user's browser to automatically download and install a malicious program if the user is tricked into viewing a malicious HTML document containing multiple frames referencing a malicious file. Apparently, by sending multiple requests for a file, the security restrictions of the browser can be bypassed and the file is silently downloaded and executed with the privileges of the user.

Successful exploitation requires certain unknown factors. Reportedly, the vulnerability is most often present in Internet Explorer 6.0 installed on a Windows 2000 based system.

NOTE: According to Microsoft, Internet Explorer on Windows Server 2003 runs in "Enhanced Security Configuration" by default and therefore prevents the vulnerability from being exploited. However, if this setting has been disabled, the vulnerability can be exploited.
