Description:
A vulnerability has been reported in Maelstrom, which potentially can be exploited by a malicious, local user to escalate privileges on a vulnerable system.

The vulnerability is caused due to a boundary error. This can be exploited by supplying an overly long, specially crafted argument to the "-player" parameter when executing the program, which will result in a buffer overflow.

Successful exploitation will grant privileges as the "games" group on systems, where Maelstrom has the sgid bit set.

The vulnerability has been reported in version 3.0.5 and 3.0.6. Other versions may also be affected.

An exploit has been released.

This is very similar to the buffer overflow in the "-server" parameter:
