Description

Four vulnerabilities have been reported in Sun ONE Application Server, which can be exploited to disclose sensitive information, conduct Cross-Site Scripting attacks or partly bypass the logging functionality.

1) An information disclosure vulnerability exists due to an input validation error. It is possible to disclose the source code of ".jsp" applications by sending a HTTP request where the file extension has been written in upper case.

2) The logging routine only logs the first 4042 bytes in a HTTP request even though HTTP requests up to 4096 bytes are accepted. This is a problem, since a malicious person can hide which files are being requested by sending long specially crafted HTTP requests for them.

Example hiding request for "somefile.jsp":
http://[victim]/4042_bytes_long_directory/../somefile.jsp

3) The vulnerability is caused due to an input validation error. If an error occurs during the processing of a Java application, an error page is returned to the user. However, a part of the requested URL is included in this error page without being sanitised. This makes it possible to inject arbitrary script code.

Example:
http://[victim]/webapps-simple/jsp/source.jsp?<script>alert(document.cookie)</script>

4) When Sun ONE Application Server is installed, it sets world-readable permissions on the default directory "C:\sun". However, the file "C:\sun\appserver7\statefile" contains a plain text username and password to the administrative server, which makes it possible for a malicious, local user to gain knowledge of these.

Solution
1-2) Filter long requests, malicious characters, and requests for resources with ".JSP" extensions in a case sensitive HTTP proxy or firewall with URL filtering capabilities.
