Description

A weakness has been reported in Microsoft Internet Explorer, which can be exploited by malicious people to conduct cross-site scripting attacks.

The weakness is caused due to an error in the displaying of domain names of FTP servers when the "Enable folder view for FTP sites" option is disabled. This can be exploited to execute arbitrary HTML and script code in a user's browser session in context of an affected domain.

Successful exploitation requires that the FTP server runs on a wildcard domain.

The weakness is reported in versions 5.01, 6, 7, and 8.

NOTE: A similar weakness when handling file names exists in Internet Explorer 6 only.

Solution
Enable the "Enable folder view for FTP sites" option.
