The long awaited Auto Update functionality for Secunia PSI 2.0 is now available in beta. The beta also features a new user interface and an improved presentation of the scan result.

We are happy to announce the immediate availability of the Secunia Personal Software Inspector (PSI) 2.0 Beta.

We hope you will take the opportunity to join the last part of the testing phase before the Secunia PSI 2.0 goes "Final". By joining the beta you can help make the new Secunia PSI 2.0 a better product which hopefully will help millions of users secure themselves against the threat from having unpatched programs.

Background for Secunia PSI 2.0
The Secunia Development Team started working on the Secunia PSI 2.0 earlier this year, based on the established baseline from the Secunia PSI 1.5.

The concepts and ideas of this release are unprecedented by other tools and thus much conceptual work has been put into creating the new Secunia PSI.

Two months ago we released a "Technology Preview" of the Automatic-Updates feature to thousands of Secunia Community Users the feedback we received have been overwhelmingly positive. During the "Technology Preview" we have been in continuous dialogue with the users and have improved the functionality based on their feedback.

A brand new Secunia PSISecunia PSI 2.0 Beta - Dashboard
The core of the Secunia PSI, the scan engine or the Secunia Software Inspector technology has remained practically untouched and it is still the most accurate scanning engine available for detecting installed programs and missing security updates on the Windows platform.

For the rest of the Secunia PSI it's quite a different story. The whole application has practically been torn down and rebuilt. We did this to accommodate the fact that the Secunia PSI has grown to become a mature application used by millions of users who trust and rely on it in order to secure their PCs against the threat from vulnerabilities.

This is also why the Secunia PSI uses the same framework and engine which we use in our commercial solutions, like the Secunia CSI, which is used by some of the largest and most security conscious companies and organisations in the world.

Can somebody please help I am trying to update to PS I 2.0 beta. The installation works perfectly but in the final screen on asking to start PSI a blank screen flashes up for a fraction of a second and the PSI icon appears in the system tray. On moving the mouse icon to the system tray icon the PSI icon disappears and nothing else happens. I am upgraded from 1.5 .0 .1 and then found after installing 2.0 beta that 1.5 .0 .2 was available. For I installed 1.5 .0 .2 to find that exactly the same thing happened as the 2.0 beta. The PSI) appeared in the system tray and on accessing with the mouse pointer. It disappeared and nothing happens. I then reverted back to 1.5 .0 .1 to find all my scanning data had been lost and the program appeared as a new installation. Can anyone advise what might be happening as I am completely lost at this point.

I am running Windows XP Professional on an Intel 945 PVS motherboard with dual core processor and 4GB RAM.

Don't worry about mistakes , we all make lots .

If you scroll right thr'u you will find some workarounds to let you use the 2.0 Beta version ; otherwise stick with the 1.5.0.1

Secunia does not keep scan records but merely displays the info from the last full scan you run . They also keep your profile data .

In the PSI "Secunia Profile" tab if it not already filled in , complete your profile the details you used for your original installation and make sure they are the same -where necessary - as your profile here on the Forum website .

The second workaround for Beta 2 in Smurphdude's post worked and I am now running OK in Beta 2. I now have to try to get to grips with this new program.

Last edited on 24th Sep, 2010 05:20		 Painful failure to install. I'd been using PSI for sometime. I installed the PSI Beta on my Windows 7 laptop. It installed OK so this evening, Thursday, I tried to install PSI Beta on my desktop XP. Over and over and over again, it simply would not install properly. Not only that. Now the regular PSI will not install. It looked like it was being installed, but.. . No icon was showing, so I created a shortcut icon on my desktop. I would double click, the screen would flash, and then nothing. And whenever I saw the icon on the bar at the bottom of the computer -- it would disappear whenever I moved the mouse over it.

THUS I CAN NO LONGER USE PSI, neither the old version nor the beta. So this means that I would have to install the most dangerous program Java in order to check on my updates online. Very depressing. HELP ME IF YOU CAN.

 @DHC - Your problem is I think as reported in this thread http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/482... which is a bug that affects some XP3 users on PSI 1.5.0.2 and beta 2. You may have had a slightly different version on 1.5.0.2 installed previously as it appears that the installer was changed on 21/7/10, and the bug was first reported the next day.

The easiest workaround that gets both 1.5.0.2 and beta 2 running is to go to the compatibility tab on PSI.exe after install and check the tick box that says "Turn off advanced text services for this program". Please post back to say if this solves your problem. If not try some of the other workarounds posted towards the end of that thread.

 I did as you suggested -- I tried with the Beta .2. The problem was, that after the installation the text that you indicated would be there -- "Turn off advanced text services for this program" -- was nowhere to be seen.

HERE'S MY TEMPORARY FIX: WAIT UNTIL SECUNIA FIXES IT!! In the meantime I installed that god awful Java so I can check for updates on the web. With Firefox. I have it turned off and will only turn it on when I have to check for updates.

 Hi,

The option to disable "Advanced text services" was not the fix we release for the 2.0 Version. If you follow the instructions below exactly, you should be able to have the PSI 2.0 running in a few minuttes.

This bug is known to not appear in the 1.5.0.1 version - most likely, this is what you had installed before. You can download the 1.5.0.1 version here: ftp://ftp.secunia.com/PSISetup1501.exe

If you want to set up the PSI 2.0 Beta to work in spite of the XP SP3 bug, try following this guide:

Everybody experiencing this bug, I suggest you try installing the Secunia PSI 2.0 Beta, which can be had here: http://secunia.com/PSI2SetupBeta.exe
The following guide does not apply unless you are running the PSI 2.0 beta.

If the Secunia PSI still does not run after simply installing the beta, try closing it down and following this procedure.

First, open the "cmd" program. You can do this by typing "cmd" in either the "run" box (Found under Start in XP), or directly in the search field (under start in Vista and Win7).

Then, type
cd "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI"
into the cmd window, preserving the quotes around the path. From here, you can run the PSI with different options. Before doing this, and before attempting to try another option, it is very important to close every running instance of the PSI, by right-clicking the tray icon and selecting Quit.

Try running the PSI with this command:
psi.exe --dep-allow-atl-emu --verbose --debug secunia.txt

If the above option did not help your PSI installation to run correctly, please close down any running instances of the PSI, and repeat the run with this command:
psi.exe --no-force-dep --verbose --debug secunia.txt

If running with either of these options does not correct the problem, please email the "secunia.txt" file, which was created in "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI", to support@secunia.com. Do NOT post any information from the log here, as the information contained within is specific to you.

If either of these options makes your PSI run successfully, terminate the PSI and repeat the command that worked, this time adding the "-S" flag, and not adding the "--verbose" or "--debug" flags. Running with "-S" saves your options for future use. An example of a full command, which also saves the setting, is "psi.exe --no-force-dep -S", which will store the "--no-force-dep" option for the future.

If you save a setting, and wish to return to default settings, run the PSI with this command: "psi.exe -Z", which will remove all PSI settings stored in the registry.

 I did it! Thanks a million. Beta 2 is running like a charm. Here's what I did I copied and pasted your directions into note pad, then made the note pad window long and very narrow, so that I had the text I had to input above the "run window (XP). Nothing at all went wrong. It all worked. If I can do it, anyone can.

 It worked early in the AM, but when I turned my computer on just now 12:45 PM the same old symptoms. I had this was a do once and it is fixed. It is not fixed and I do have a life to live, I have work to do. PLEASE ADVISE -- but if it isn't a fix that really fixes it, then I need to uninstall.

Hi David ,

I'm a bit busy atm and Emil has probably gone for today and may not be back at work on the PSI until Monday .

When you got the Beta to work , did you exit the programme (using the tray icon) and go back in to the "cmd" magic black box and write a new command that starts the same as the one that started the PSi working but you change the ending to -S , as per Emil's instructions here :-

"If either of these options makes your PSI run successfully, terminate the PSI and repeat the command that worked, this time adding the "-S" flag, and not adding the "--verbose" or "--debug" flags. Running with "-S" saves your options for future use. An example of a full command, which also saves the setting, is "psi.exe --no-force-dep -S", which will store the "--no-force-dep" option for the future."

You put in the beginning part (of the two choices) that worked for you .

I'm sure you can do it ; however if you want to wait for Monday and Emil , reinstalling version 1.5.0.1 should allow you to have the PSI back in it's older and still most excellent earlier form ; this is the installer :-

 The first time I failed to do the -S part. But, only minutes ago I went through and entered everything as directed and it fixed nothing whatsoever.

I am finished with Beta installs forever, any Beta whatsoever. I now have re-installed the version before the bug hit the programs. When all the Beta testing is finished and you have a finished product that will be the time I will use it.

A good decision , especially in the light that the PSI Beta is a breeze compared with most Beta's and don't even mention Alpha's !!

If you like , if you have/take the time , you need to set up and get the PSI Beta running as you did the first time with the long "--verbose --debug secunia txt." tail and then when it 's working go back in and re-enter the command this time with the short "-S" tail .

1.5.0.1 is still a top quality product and if you are 100% secure/patched then that's the big part of the battle won . The Beta can/will only show the same 100% :))

Anthony, go back and read my post. I explicitly state that I did all of this, after the first time when I failed to do it. I followed all the directions. Indeed, I had a text version of the exact text supplied by Secunia to be entered. I triple checked everything, including spacing. The Beta 2 always installed, but, changing the end to the "-S" tail as I did, entering it - exactly as I viewed Secunia's text and instructions, it failed to get the result.

So let's clear up why I'm finished with Beta testing. I followed the instructions and they did not work. I've never downloaded Beta programs for the very reason that they need testing. So I did Beta testing this time. So it's a lesson learned. Never do it again. - David

I have confirmed that the -S option is currently not working. Sorry for the inconvenience.

In the mean time, the suggested workaround of disabling Advanced Text Services seem to work. For all those experiencing this issue, I suggest that you disable this service for the time being. To do so, right-click the psi.exe file (located in %ProgramFiles%\Secunia\PSI), select Compatability, and tick the checkbox that says "Turn off Advanced text services for this program".

Thank you very much, smurphdude, for suggesting this solution.

Doing so should allow the PSI to run successfully. Can anyone confirm that this workaround works as intended?

A very minor point for new users ; when you right click the Psi.exe file you first select "Properties" in the displayed menu and then select the "Compatibility" tab in the window .

 Pleased to see your name and the informative info. I have been away so just this week installed the beta version. After a few freezes in the beginning, all is well now. Just need to complete my reading material. My question is this. Since I am running a beta program now, and beta programs do not appear in the MS site for removing or adjusting secunia.Where will I find this folder now when stored.

Due to a numbering bug in the PSI's , the 2.0 beta shows as version 1.9.0.3007 and is found as such in the Add/Remove of the Control Panel - at least on my XP .

It installs as C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI\.. and this folder should also contain an uninstall.exe file .

When you change to a different version , the PSI installer should do the uninstall of the old version for you . Some people have had minor problems and prefer to do a complete clean out of old version and only use IE to download and install the new version . My XP and Firefox have handled everything correctly for me so far - crosses fingers and smiles nicely :))

Although , the PSI does not recognise either Alphas or Betas , it does recognise itself as 1.9.0.3007 :))

I hate how every time I minimize PSI 2.0 beta for the first time during the session it reminds me its still running using a balloon tip. Once is enough!! If you click the tip you should not show it again to the user, period!

Are you running the Internet Explorer 9.x Beta on your Win7 installation?

Last edited on 5th Nov, 2010 16:25		 Not sure where to put this feedback but Secunia asked for feedback. I find the version 2 beta superb. No problem with installation. The layout is terrific and you seemed to have upped the speed significantly. The moment I've updated the program that has security faults, it seems almost immediately to be recognized by version 2 beta unlike the previous versions where you had to rescan.
I don't know if anyone has told Google Chrome about removing the previous version when they make a security update, but I have found that despite updating to the latest version they always leave the previous version in the AppData/Local/Google/Application folder.
Thanks a lot for the work Secunia have done to improve the security of computers. I rate it as a major advance in security and as some of your users point out - it's fun too!

Hi ,

The Chrome update situation is known to many including the people at Google Chrome ; there are many blogs , posts about it . In short , it will stay that way for the foreseeable future .

I did some manual deletes for my Chrome Dev channel version and my Chrome Frame Beta version today - they both updated to cover the embedded Flash problem . As "Betas" , they only display in the PSI under Google gears ; however , the open folder link (the right hand one of the two beige folder icons) which shows when you click the [+] beside a programme makes it a fairly painless task and done in seconds . No rescan needed .

I also let the "auto-update" run for Flash - it is set to prompt me first - closed browsers and left PSI open (the Beta is not Flash dependent) - turned away for a few minutes and all was done , again no rescan ; as you have seen for many operations , the display updates in real(ish) time :))

Just upgraded to PSI 2.0 beta build 1.9.0.5004 and even worse.

Now I get "not responding" and asking "stop running this script".

Also, while this happens PSI is maxing out 1 CPU core. :(

Thankfully I have 7 more. :D Would be screwed on a single core system, as in 100% CPU usage.

Of course the original issue of it freezing on minimize is no more since you can no longer minimize to notification area it seems. Clicking close (the x) now closes it completely. :(

Guess you guys are not testing against IE 9?

Are you running the Internet Explorer 9.x Beta on your Win7 installation?

Hello.
psi 2.0 Beta is not compatible with IE9 Beta. The point has been made on the forum a few times recently.
It may be worth noting also that psi...all versions.....do not monitor beta/dev versions of programs....the core engine being fundamentally the same.

 Well dang, but good to know. Thanks!

That being said you really should fix it for IE 9 during the IE 9 beta period so that when IE 9 goes finally you already support it out of box. ;)

And about closing the thread. Does not look like I can do that?

 Hello again.
All the comments/suggestions regarding psi 2.0 Beta are monitored by Secunia staff...tho' it seems doubtful any changes will occur regarding beta/dev detections.
Whosoever is the originator of a thread is given the option to close it.....the user will see Accept where you now see Reply/Quote. When and if the user feels the issue/matter resolved. In this instance the thread was started by Secunia.
