Entry written by Morten Stengaard, Director, Product Management & Quality Assurance.

Today Secunia  reaches an important milestone, as we  release a new vulnerability and patch management solution – the Secunia SmallBusiness – in public beta,  targeted at the small business and Small Office/Home Office (SOHO) segments (read the press release here).

For more than 10 years, Secunia’s vision has been to become the brand synonymous with reliable vulnerability intelligence and to offer cutting-edge vulnerability management solutions. Pursuing this vision has led to the development of several award-winning vulnerability scanning and patch management solutions for both private users – the Secunia PSI – and corporations – the Secunia CSI.

With the introduction of the Secunia SmallBusiness, our goal has been to develop a highly-automated cloud-based solution that combines the best of our private and corporate products; that is, enterprise class security based on Secunia’s in-house research and proven scanning technology combined with an easy-to-use web interface that allows small businesses to work intelligently with patch management.

Many small businesses do not patch at all, or they only deploy a few random patches, because they either don’t have a patch management solution in place, or the one they have is only capable of handling Microsoft updates. A complete patch management process should involve much more than just deploying Microsoft security updates.
To work intelligently with patch management, organizations therefore need automated solutions that do two things:  Firstly, tell them which vulnerabilities are out there and what software in their infrastructure they affect. Secondly, are capable of providing and deploying the actual patches to fix the problem. The Secunia SmallBusiness was developed to help small business owners address these problems.

I want to thank the Secunia community and our loyal users for testing and providing feedback to the solution, which we initially released in a technology preview in December last year. Your feedback and comments are much valued, and we hope that you will like the solution, which will be free to use for up to five PCs for both private users and small businesses.

Stay Secure,
Morten R Stengaard

Secunia SmallBusiness is not able to distinguish multiple computers behind NAT. I have two computers behind a NAT-firewall. Secunia SmallBusiness show only one computer.

I am not sure the NAT in your firewall is causing this issue. I would suggest trying a reinstall of the PSI on the computer that is not showing up in SmallBusiness. When downloading the PSI from the link provided in the SmallBusiness interface, please make sure the installer is not renamed in any way. If Windows has renamed the installer it will not show up in the SmallBusiness interface exactly as you have described.

I connected both computers directly to internet (-> different WAN IP adresses). Secunia SmallBusiness show only PC1, ten minutes later only PC2. Both computers use the same backup image:

- identical operating system + software
- identical SID (Security Identifier -> Windows)
- different computer name
- identical PSISetup+id=<xyz>.exe (MD5 checksum identical, file name identical)

When installing the PSI it creates a unique UserID in the registry. Since you are using identical clones you should also have identical UserIDís. The Secunia SmallBusiness will then see those cloned machines as the same. We are aware of this issue and working on a solution.

great new interface to check the state of several PSI-Clients.

It's easier to use than CSI and gives a fast overview over a smallgroup. No installation is necessary and I can also check from home.

Feature request!

Please add a button to deselect all Computers to make it easier to check a single instance.
