I have had nothing but frustration using Securnia and Office 2003. It is installed on a Vista Business and it informs me that Excel Word and Viso are unsecure. Yet when I down the updates the update program informs me that the affected applications are not installed!!! PSI is 1.0.0.1. Doing a manual scan changes nothing.

Yeah, I had the same problem with Word 2003. For a few days after Patch Tuesday, Secunia would show the updated Word as Insecure, even after repeated manual scans, but after the recent IE-7 emergency patch, Word no longer shows up as Insecure.
Not sure what the deal with this is, but it seems to be a minor glitch and on the whole I find PSI a great app to complement the usual security suites. Especially since there is no easy way to update all the non-MS apps in Windows, unlike in Ubuntu where the Synaptic Update Manager takes care of all installed apps at one go.

I don't think this is a PSI problem, but more of a problem with the way Microsoft issues their patches.

From my experience, Microsofts office patches requires prerequisites before they will install, e.g. certain office service packs to be installed and all previous office patches as well - before you can install these security patches.

I have successfully upgraded my "Windows Update" to "Microsoft Update" and it solved my office problems quickly.

Do you guys use Microsoft Update (NOT "Windows" Update) to update your office applications?

Go to "Windows Update" (with IE) and choose to upgrade to "Microsoft Update":

Is it an option for you try that?

Even after using MS Update I had to still download the patches that Secunia was referring to all this time but was able to apply them. It is too bad that we can not rely only on MS Update nor Securnia for patches.

Thanks for the help.

Issue:
I ran into a similar problem with MS Word & after installing the updated to patch Word it showed as insecure.

Issue Resolved:
I contacted Secunia support to inform them that the PSI database for insecure applications was incorrect!
They were showing the Updated patch as insecure.
Secunia Support DID see my email & within the same day FIXED this database issue.

You got to understand something here...
This is a FREE security program & as such about 750,000 (or more) users have downloaded it & are now using it to keep their PC's secure!!!
Can you imagine having just a few people to resolve all the issues that would come up! Yea...a TON of emails...
SO, if you find an error like this give them a hand & point it out to them.

1. IF you don't have the complete Office 2003 package installed (I only use WORD) & only have word installed add the other Not installed programs to the rules in the PSI Ignore list!
(You do this in Settings)
Look at the insecure program's installation directory you wish to be ignored & not scanned and ADD it to the Ignore list. This will fix the PSI problem.

2. MS Office 2003 require ALL of the security patches to be installed whether or not the program is actually installed or not!!!
Yea, this is just STUPID on MS's part...
So I go ahead & install the ACCESS, PowerPoint, etc update patches even though they aren't install so that "their" scan shows MS Office 2003 Pro as patched...

So there you have it! Take the route(s) you want to, to fix these issues... ;)

I have similar issues with MS Office 2003 & Vista Ultimate. Access & Infopath are the ones flagged with pointers to updates that when I attempt to apply them, each one indicates that they are already installed.

That is strange since MS Update did not pull down updates to Powerpoint 2003 nor Access neither of which are installed here. Were exactly did you see on MS website that all of the updates to Office 2003 be installed whether those applications are installed or not?

Seems to be another good reason not to be using MS Office.

I DON'T use Microsoft Update.
I use Windows Update (the older one that 10 times faster!) for the OS updates & Office Update for Office 2003 Pro.

Except if one is using Vista and wants to update Office 2003 MS seems to force one to use MS Update rather than being able to use Office Update.

Oh yea, I forgot about that as I'm usually using XP PRO SP3 instead of running Vista Ultimate SP1 like I am right now.
Yea, you have to use the built in Windows Updates in the programs start menu...
Even still I haven't had any problems with office 2003 pro with WORD installed...but as I said I downloaded & installed ALL the updates they asked for with Office which did include programs I didn't have installed...PITA Grrrr!
Like this last go round with updates I installed Security Update for Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (KB958436 even though I don't have it installed! LOL
I guess office looks that you have the package installed more than what programs you have installed & are using!
Which again is really stupid! :-|

I have found the same on a number of occasions and the problem is solved when rebooting the machine.

Office does have a possibility to repair/check/re-install.
Did you try this option?
