All should update their Quicktime to Version 7.7 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL837) immediately, as ist is not covered by Secunia PSI yet.

Hi all,

There seems to be a problem with updating to version 7.7 :

- clicking "Download" on the official page mentioning the new version 7.7 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL837) brings to this page (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/) which still proposes version 7.6.9 !

- installing the solution from whithin PSI brings up the same page (http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/) ...

I made a Google search, many sites are talking about version 7.7 but all link to this same download page still proposing version 7.6.9 ...

So, how are we supposed to update from version 7.6.9 to 7.7 ???

Or did I miss something ? ;-)

Hi Thokr, this worked for me: start QuickTime, press on help, press on update. You then get a selection menu and can download and install update. New verson is then: 7.7 (1680.34).

Hi Leendert Kip,

When I first opened QT, the update was proposed automatically and the best is that clicking "Update now" brings up the download page on Apple's site still proposing version 7.6.9 ... :-)
I then of course followed your advice through "Help" and it worked right away ! Thanks a lot :-)

But still, Apple needs to update his download page as, at this present moment, the only way to update to version 7.7 seems to be doing it from whithin QT !

Personally I do not automatic update any software because I don't want
surprises that updates run a the same time of other processes. The only
exception is Avira which is really 'silent'. So I switched off all automatic up-
dating and check for updates manually twice a week.

Same for me and I'm checking the updates twice a week through SUMo (Software Updates Monitor). That's how I was firstly informed of QT's update; I forgot about the "inside update" as I have QT automatically installed with iTunes but I'm not using it ...

Thanks Thokr, I'll try that! I used the FileHippo updatechecker for a while but the icon suddenly disappeared from the taskbar. Uninstall/reinstall didn't solve
the problem, so I uninstalled it definately.

In the past, I tried Filehippo's & other updaters out there. At the end, I discovered SUMo which I'm using now since quite a long time.
One of his advantages is, in my point of view, the possibilty to drag any program installed on your machine into the surveillance list (updates list).
Up to now, I never had a problem & I never missed an update ... ;-)
Here also, I disabled the automatic startup with Windows; instead I open manually, as said, twice a week the program and then download the eventual updates directly from each developer's site . :-)
And the support is very reactive and effective too ...

I was able to download the correct QuickTime Player v. 7.70 installation file from the TechSpot site at http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4938-apple-quick...

Thanks to carolfromhazlet for posting this solution in the Apple iTunes for Windows forum at https://discussions.apple.com/message/15860782#158... Users in the iTunes forum also noted that updating from within QuickTime (Help | Update Existing Software...) using the Apple Update Software delivers the correct update as well, as Leendert Kip reported above in this PSI thread.

Hi throkr.:

I've visited the download page at http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/ six times today. Four times it offered the old v. 7.69 file (once just 10 minutes ago) and twice it offered the new v. 7.70 file. I proceeded with the downloads and when I checked the file properties I was able to confirm that I had received two different versions of the installation file as well - either v. 7.69.80.9 or v. 7.70.80.34. This bizarre behavior has occurred with both my home dial-up Internet connection and with a public WiFi connection.

I'm beginning to suspect that Apple is occasionally re-directing users to a secondary server that incorrectly delivers the old installation file when their primary download server gets too busy. I can't see anything in the history of my NIS 2011 security software that would indicate that I'm being re-routed on the Apple website because of an IP address block on my PC's firewall.

Quicktime offered me the 7.0 update when I started Quicktime, but it still wanted to download 7.69. I was able to get 7.7 from the techspot link.

Just a word of caution about upgrading to QuickTime 7.70 if you use iTunes for Windows. Morac posted the following comment in the Apple iTunes for Windows forum today at https://discussions.apple.com/message/15866444#158... :

"QuickTime 7.7 doesn't break iTunes for Windows, but it does break access to past purchases in the iTunes Store.

Technically it's not QuickTime 7.70 that's the problem, it's the updated Apple Application Support component that gets installed with QuickTime 7.7 (and Safari). There is a way to install just QuickTime without upgrading the component, but I'm not sure if the component has security updates or not".

I just re-ran the Apple Software Update from within QuickTime 7.69 and the only updates I'm being offered are for QuickTime, MobileMe and Safari. Other people in the iTunes forum have reported that their iTunes software doesn't work correctly after updating to QuickTime 7.70, so it's something to keep in mind.

Just to clarify my last post, I think Morac was referring to the Purchased link in the iTunes Store that is found under the Quick Links section of the store's home page when you're logged into your iTunes account. This new feature allows iPhone/iPad users to transfer purchased apps and e-books between different devices. Sorry for the confusion.

Does anyone know if the Apple Application Support program is updated if you use the installation file downloaded from the TechSpot site? If I run the Apple Software Updater from within QuickTime (Help | Update Existing Software), the v. 7.70 update is 45 MB, but the installation file downloaded from TechSpot (or directly from the Apple download site, if you can get the correct version) is only 38 MB. Perhaps iTunes users will only update the Apple Application Support program if they use the Apple Software Updater to update QuickTime.

I haven't updated QuickTime yet and I currently have Apple Application Support v. 1.5.2.

I finally took the plunge and updated to QuickTime v. 7.70 with the 38 MB installation file downloaded from the TechSpot site at http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4938-apple-quick...

The QuickTime update also updated my Apple Application Support v. 1.5.2 to v. 2.0.1, so I don't know if it's even possible to update to QuickTime to v. 7.70 without simultaneously updating the Apple Application Support software.
