I have been using PSI for several years, but for about the last month, PSI will not do a proper full scan. Usually the Start Scan button does not do anything, Sometimes, but not always, the scan status goes from "Scan not started" to "Scan has been running for" with no time showh. Occasionally a can does seem to start (possibly from a schedule), but there seems to do only the "Downloading search rules from Secunia (https)" and the "Matching data with Secunia File Signatures engine" steps. The "Searching files on local fixed drives" and "Collecting information from files" steps and checking for Microsoft updates are not done. Usually a scan on individual items on the scan results page seems to work. This scan always ends with "Scan Aborted".

When this first started, Google Chrome 12 was detected as End-Of-Life, and I told PSI to update it. Nothing seemed to happen, so I updated Chrome manually to version 13 and deleted the version 12 files. PSI continued to detect Chrome 12 as End-of-Life even though the offending files were removed, and PSI would not do a full scan.

I removed and reinstalled PSI several times (versions 2.0.0.2001 and 2.0.0.2003) but no improvement. Finally I removed PSI and deleted all the registry keys I could find that referred to Secunia or PSI and reinstalled, but PSI still has the same problem and will not do the initial scan.

I am running Windows XP SP3 (fully patched). I was running PSI 2.0.0.2001 when the problem started, but going to 2.0.0.2003 does not help. My other computer running Vista SP2 is not having any problems with PSI.

Can you list the HijackThis log of whatever you have installed? Maybe something pops up incompatible ...

I am not familiar with HijackThis logs. I did a search on all my disks, but there are no files with Hijack in the file name.

HiJackThis is a programme that scans a PC for possible viral content.

1. The download link is here: http://free.antivirus.com/hijackthis/

2. Read the instructions carefully - it is for advanced/expert users use.

3. DO NOT publish the scan results to any Forum - better to send them to a trusted person if not an advanced user.

EDIT - Looks like I am to late - U have published. I can delete that log file if U like after @mbarley42 has given U advice on what to do next

I cannot say what out of this HJT log breaks PSI. I was suspecting malware, but it seems There may be incompatible software.

Try to eliminate possible causes. Certain programs will allow you to temporarily not run certain software at startup. I will not tell you the name of the one I use since it is possible to shoot oneself in the leg and you did not know of HJT.

Have you eliminated registry error with some registry fix software?

Anthony, is it against rules of forum to post HJT logs?

Regards,
Marv

EDIT - P.S. My mind must have slipped. I meant Maurice, is it against the rules of forum to post HJT logs. They are very informative.

No - it gives away personal detail as can been seen by reading the log.

Hi ,

It light help to clarify the version numbers for the PSI which are qoted in the OP .

This page gives the recent changelog(s) (scroll down) not including the current version which is 2.0.0.3003 - right click the PSI treay-icon and select "About" :-

http://secunia.com/products/consumer/PSI/download_...

You will see a download links for the PSI at the top of the page and alternatives on the rhs of the page , the lower link is for an "Older Version" which is 1.5.0.2 . It may be worth trying this to see if you can get a scan . This version does not do "auto-updates" .

Re Chrome , your updatres will be silent and auto from Google itself so clicking the link in the PSI does nothing except provide a link to a download site . See your verion by clicking the spanner icon top rhs any browser tab and select "About ..." ; it will confirm your version or initiate an update . The old version file will always be left behind as a zombie + any "Insecure/EOL" versions , the latter need to be deleted WHEREVER thay are "seen" by the PSI to get 100% score .

Let us know how you go .

Anthony

PS: unless you are an expert , be careful about un-necessary fiddling in the Registry .

Sorry, I guess I posted the version numbers incorroectly. The PSI version numbers I have tried are 2.0.0.2001 and 2.0.0.3003.

I installed PSI version 1.5.0.2, and it seems to be working correctly and will do full scans. The main problem with it is that it flags "zombie" versions of Google Chrome and Flash.

Hello again ,

When you say "flags zombie" files , what is the "flag" ?? Do you get "Insceure or EOL" for them ?? What are the installation paths ?? Do you need help if you wish to clean them out (not forgetting PSI 1.5.x is Flash dependent - unlike 2.0.x) ??

As the psi.exe process is working and your (embedded) IE internet settings allow access to the Secunia servers , why not try the 2.0 installer link (at the upper left of my linked website page) and download it and let it "overinstall" your 1.5.0.2 ??

Edit : make sure in 2.0 .x that under Configuration->Settings-> Drives that the drives are displayed and box ticked and are seen on the Scan page line 3 "Searching files on local fixed drives".

Anthony,

Flash leaves the old .ocx files in \Windows\System32\Macromed when a new version is installed. PSI 1 detects these as Insecure. PSI 1 also detects the old versions of Chrome as Insecure. (I know I can manually delete all of these to make PSI happy.)

I tried installing PSI 2.0.0.3003 over PSI 1, but It still will not do a full scan.

PSI 2 shows no drives under Configuration/Setings/Drives, but I don't think it ever did. On my other computer where things are working, no drives are shown either.

I am not quite certain of exactly when I started having problems. I thought it was earlier, but maybe was about the time of the August Microsoft patches.

Thanks for your help so far.

You ought to be careful with flash. With PSI 1.5, you need to exit PSI to have old .ocx removed, and also quit IE, and all possibly other programs using Flash ActiveX control.

It is best done with uninstall program from Adobe itself:

http://fpdownload.adobe.com/get/flashplayer/curren...

I haven't really verified manually what PSI 2.0 does.

Anthony, Maurice?

PSI version 2 is not reliant on Flash so can be left running. These must not be running to prevent the old ocx from being left behind.

b. Windows Messenger.
c. Incredimail.
d. All Adobe Products.

Hello all ,

Starting to get late for me ce soir .

I will leave any Flash updating details for now as Maurice has already given you the basics . The latest Flash installers remove the older files including the .ocx if you follow the instructions and close and exit any/every programme using Flash .

Can only speak for XP SP3 , but from the outset with version 2.0.x , I have always needed the drives to be displayed within the settings and scan pages : I have one HDD with two (C&D) partitions and an OEM partition . If I now uncheck the C and D boxes in "Settings->Drives" , then nothing shows in line 3 on the scan page and if I run a scan it very quickly goes to lines 6 and 7 and checks for M$ data and then displays one programme , being my XP Home Edition .

In your situation , I can only think that the non-display of the Drives is at the root of the problem .

At the outset with my first use of 2.0.x , I was only able to get my D partition to display in "settings" (and for it to be scanned) by moving/copying a Program Files folder with an up to date .exe file in it from the C drive to the D drive . Maybe Maurice or Secunia (when they are back tomorow CET) will have other suggestions*** to get the your drives to display . It has been a problem for some in the past but I do not remember any specific resolution being posted to the Forum .

Anthony

PS:*** it could relate to the psia.exe and it's connection to the Secunia servers .

Just a hint. Perhaps the problem is in PSI 2.0 and Chrome About trying to do the same thing so some bad locking occurred.

This just occurred to me yesterday evening.

In that case, uninstall/fresh install of Google Chrome would be recommended. I tried to repeat steps in automatic update pending with "delayed - program still running" and no Chrome running, but then the Chrome->About update stuck and it took getting out of Chrome and restarting Chrome->About update, so no mess up affected PSI.

However, perhaps damage occurred to PSI profile, and the only way to remedy it may be to force Secunia PSI to generate new UserID key.

For this, IMHO, deletion of HKCU\Software\Secunia\PSI\UserID key may cure this freeze, and it worked for me several times in the past, but it is not a cure-all.

Be aware that manually deleting a key is a sensitive operation and that you can permanently damage your computer's registry.

Hi ,

Must apologise for not getting back ; I am very busy elsewhere atm .

Ref Google Chrome : I use a non-Stable Chrome browser version(s) but have Stable Chrome Frame which the PSI reports ; I have just noticed when it silent updated (a pop-up reported it a couple of days ago) that in the PSI display it now has "aut-update" available .Seems a bit bizarre/overkill as Chrome should always auto/silent update by Google and you could not and probably still cannot turn that action off .Do not have time to check it out further , but seems even if it causes a loop/freeze that is unlikely to be your/the problem of the scan not running .

Looking quckly at the HighJack This log , it seems that the psia.exe loads as a service and the process starts/runs , same for the tray .exe .

Does the PSI load normally at boot or do you start it from All Programmes ??

Does the PSi GUI display/run correctly in all other aspects - apart from the Scan(s) not functioning ??

Are all the PSI processesrunning correctly - I did not see the sua.exe in the log . Is it set to run as a service and it's process visible in Task Manager - you need auto-updating to be selected in "settings" ??

Do the processes get through your NiS and any other security guards ?? they need to get in and out .

You might wish to contact support@secunia.com and ask them to take a look here at this thread. I think that not having the Drives correctly displayed is at least part of the problem or a symptom .

Will check back when I can .

Anthony

Edit : Are you running XP under a default/Admin user account or in a restrcted account ??

Anthony,
I have managed to recreate the problem on my test PC (XP SP3) whereby no drives are showing in the settings tab.

Everything appears normal except when U try to scan - after about 5 seconds a box appears saying "Scan Aborted"

No solution yet from my tests therefore also interested in the reply to your questions to see if there is common ground.

U are also correct in that this issue has been raised before. Not seen a real solution to it so far.

PSI loads automatically without having to manually start anything. (I do have to bring up the GUI from the tray icon.)

PSI GUI works fine, except for the Start Scan button.

I am not sure about sua.exe. I will have to reinstall PSI 2 and see... sua.exe is running as a service on my Vista machine where things are working.

As far as I can tell, NIS is not interfering with any of the PSI processes.

sua.exe is not running. My Vista machine has a Secunia Update Agent key under HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services and is running sua.exe, but there is no such key on my XP machine.

I am running in an administrator account.

Did you try to uninstall PSI 2.0, delete registry key HKCU\Software\Secunia\PSI\UserID, and then reinstall PSI?

Thank you Maurice for this tip.

Actually, I was closing down PSI 2.0 just as 1.5. It is not such a problem once I routinely downloaded flash NP and ActiveX, via dlflash.bat script.

It goes like uninstall, install AX, install NP plugin, done.

Mirsad,

Did that and then restored the profile from the Configuration/Secunia Community Profile tab. Before I restored the profile it was not working either.

rmendow,

If this (uninstall, deleting C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI and deleting registry key HKCU\Software\Secunia\PSI\UserID) did not work, then I am out of options ATM.

Consider possibility that past manual interventions have corrupted your registry. Did you do a registry scan for problems/issues? Have you absolutely excluded malware? Do a deep scan, and a scan for rootkits out of CD ROM raised environment.

That about covers it.

Rgds,
Mirsad

Hi @rmendow ,

Sorry but I am still very busy elsewhere .

Is the sua.exe found in the Program Files\Secunia\PSI\..... folder ?? AFAIK , it is only needed to run as a service/process when auto updating is selected , but I believe it should be in the PF folder on installation ; how do(es) the contents of the PF folder compare with that on your other "working" machine ??

When you installed the PSI did you (always) select "auto-updating" during the installation ?? Did you (ever) get aa "Error" splash window saying that the sua.exe file (or any other for that matter) could not be installed - with three options/choices ??

Did you always use the same browser to get the installer ?? Do you keep the cache(s) cleaned out ??

Have you run any "heavyweight" clean up/utilities software recently ., particularly involving the Registry ??

There seem to be at least two other threads in recent days showing a similar problem to your's :(((

I note that Secunia have not responded here as yet ; you may wish to email them direct at support@secunia.com (as I suggested earlier) to see if they have some input around what seems to me to be a lack of drives being displayed in the GUI and no sua.exe installed despite your original post and mentioning Chrome auto-update .

Will get back when I can .

Take care

Anthony

Thanks Anthony.

I think I installed PSI with updates selected and with "ask for approval" (or whatever the exact words are) selected. I have never gotten an error message during installation. sua.exe is in the Program Files/Secunia/PSI directory.

I don't remember which browser I was using to the the installation file, but I always do a save and run the installer from my local disk. I don't suspect a corrupted installation file since I have run different downloads (and versions) of the installation file with no change in what is happening.

I generally don't run registry cleaners. I ran the one in Norton Utilities yesterday just to see what would happen. No change positively or negatively.

I did email Secunia suppor a few days ago. t. I got an email response yesterday which said to put https://psi.secunia.com was in the IE trusted sites list and to reset IE browser settings to defaults. I did add the site to the trusted sites list, but did not reset the settings to default. I really don't think my problem has anything to do with the IE settings since it seems that the Secunia signatures are being downloaded and since PSI 1 works.

From your installation choice (confirmed in the "Settings" hopefully) , you should have sua set to auto run as a service and a process . Can you confirm this is still not the case .

Do you have any log files in the PF folder ?? I have two each for psia and sua . The HKLM for sua log is shown SOFTWARE\Secunia\sua ..

I have the same system start key for sua as ypur Vista :ie: within

HKLM/System/CurrentControlSet/Services .

Whether this problem is the same as/causing the non-display of drives I cannot say ; but it would be useful to get sua started as a service and resolve that aspect ...

There are psialog.txt and sualog.txt files in PF. The sua log has not been updated since August 6. There is no registry key HKLM/Software/Secunia/Sua, although there are keys for PSI and PSIA. There seems to be a major installation problem for sua.

The psialog has repeating sections about every minute. Here is a sample

To me this seem to indicate that PSI is not connecting to the Secunia server.

Hello again ,

It seems that there are now 3 problems on your XP SP3 system , which may or may not be interlinked :-

1) The PSI installer installs the sua.exe file in the Program Files folder but does not install it/sua to run thereafter ; the relevant HKLM regisrty keys are missing . The sua log would indicate that this problem occurred around 06/08/2011 and may well be coincidental to the scan failure ; it is also close to the last M$ patch Tuesday update which included a major KB for IE .

2) The psia log posted does seem to show that there are also connection problems in getting the psia to connect correctly to the/it's Secunia srevers ; as the GUI displays correctly and version 1.5.x of the PSI runs OK , then the psi.exe would seem to connect asq it should .

3) There are no Drives displayed by the PSI and it will not run a scan ; you do not know if they were previously displayed , but say that they are equally not displayed by the PSI on your other (Vista) system .

To eliminate another possible problem/influence , please follow the Secunia emailed advice in full concerning your Internet settings :ie: make sure the correct Secunia address is listed and reset IE to default settings . At the same time I would also make sure that , for now , IE is also set as your default browser (you can change again later , if you wish) . Reboot as/if necessary .

Are you absolutely sure that the psia.exe is allowed out and back in through your security software ??

If the problem persists , thereafter , I think you do need Secunia support to advise further .

Anthony

EDIT : : in an earlier post I asked if you had run any "Cleaners" , I should emphasise that I was not recommending that you should run one ; in fact , I consider them , from my experience , to be much more harmful than useful with maybe one or two exceptions . I was just checking to see whether such a programme might be "implicated .

Anthony,

You seem to have summed things up well. I did reset IE settings to defaults. No change to problems.

I am in touch with Secunia support, but I am close to giving up on this since it is taking more time and effort that it is probably worth, and since going back to PSI 1 is a workaroud.

Thanks for your help.

Edit: I guess I am not absolutely sure that NIS is not interfering with PSI, but there was no change when I temporarily turned off Antivirus and Firewall. I also did not notice anything in the NIS logs that would indicate a problem.
