My most recent PSI 2.0 report told me that FlexNet Publisher 11.3.5.1 is insecure. Sure it provided a convenient link to update, but I could not recall installing this software.

I did a bit of research and quickly learned that it must have come bundled with some product I installed because it is copyright protection software, i.e. it keeps track of how I use the program and reports home or takes other drastic action if it thinks I am misusing it.

There is no entry in Add/Remove Programs (XP-Pro SP3) for FlexNet Publisher, so the installation is a cryptic one. Am I alone in finding that off-putting?

I am also put out that software installed on my machine (probably agreed to somewhere in a complex EULA) whose sole purpose is to protect the product of a software creator from piracy has now rendered my machine 'insecure' and my only choice is to maintain this software. Am I alone in finding this offensive?

At what level will this end? At the level of (protection of another's product)^n, i.e., n levels of software to protect software from misuse, where n is an uncontemplatably large number?

Thanks,

baumgrenze

Hi,

Can you post the debug report for the instance of FlexNet your PSI is detecting?

Hi,

If you want we can move to the "unnable to aply the patch" thread. This is the report:

---START---

Program Name:

Download Link:
http://www.globes.com/products/utilities/v11.10/lm...

Instances Found:
C:\Programme\Gemeinsame Dateien\Macrovision Shared\FLEXnet Publisher\FNPLicensingService.exe, version: 11.5.0.0

Last System Scan (localtime):
9. Sep 2011, 11:39

Operating System:
Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Service Pack 3

---END---

I run the Adobe Licensing Repair Tool. Before the version of FlexNet Publisher was version 11.5.0.0, after 11.6.0.1. PSI requires 11.10.0.2.

Thank you,

Anselm

Hi,

This program will be removed from your scan results if you run a full rescan.

Since it is embedded in another program, it is the responsibilty of the publisher of that program to issue a patch. Unless it can be proven that there is a vector to the embedded program, the application making use of FlexNet can also not be considered insecure.

Hope this helps.

Indeed PSI reports 100% after rescan.

I wrote to Adobe Support. I am not sure they understood the problem, because they thanked for my feedback and told me to contact their development department.

Thank you,

Anselm

After having fixed the issue as described I found this: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/405/kb405970.html . May be interesting.
