@Chaddie1

Hello.
When you say you are unable to update iTunes....do you mean you can't download the newer version from the link provided....or....that you've done so, but psi is still detecting the older version ?

Crossed with Maurice...sorry....I took it that Chaddie had missed a 0 from the version and it should have read 10.5.....anyrate, I'll leave it to you......regards,

Yes, sorry for the error--iTunes version 10.5. I cannot download the new version, nor can I uninstall the old version, despite repeated attempts. Here's a sample of the messages I've received:

"The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable." and

"The installation source for this product is not available. Verify that the source exists and that you can access it.

Also, that my "path cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location".

I would suggest that as psi has detected the path to the vulnerability....that you use that to remove it first...as follows :-

Deletion of an entry.

To delete a vulnerable file or folder using PSI 2 :

1. Open psi and go to Scan Results.

2. Alongside the vulnerable prog. is a "+" sign.

Clicking on that will reveal Detected Instances..

3. Below, are two yellow folders. Click the one without a red dot.
It will open Windows Explorer and you will be able to view the vulnerable files/folders.

4. Right click and delete.
Perform a full scan to confirm all in order.

Following on from that.....if you use CCleaner....run that and the Reg Cleaner integral within it, before trying to install the new version of iTunes.

Hope the foregoing is of some help.....please let the forum know how you get on.....regards,

@chaddie1. I had the same problem not long ago. If what mogs has suggested doesn't clear it, look at some of the suggestions here, which is where I found my answer (the 'regedit' one):

Moqs,

How do I know which files in the list are the vulnerable ones to delete?

From your initial Troubleshoot Report taken from Scan Results :-

Apple iTunes 10.x

Security State:
Insecure

Download Link:
http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Instances Found:
C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.exe, version: 10.4.1.10

Click on the + sign alongside the detected instance , and thereafter follow the guidelines in my previous post. Hope that helps..........

Moqs,

I did as you instructed, but am still unable to install version 10.5, or remove version 10.4....
I get messages similar to the ones in my earlier post. However, my PSI score is now 100%,
and the iTunes problem is removed from my PSI scan results. What gives?

Not at all sure what's happening there Chaddie.
So what entries for iTunes are now showing in your Scan Results psi ?
To acheive 100%...given your earlier Troubleshoot Report....it would appear that you'd have removed the vulnerability.

Moqs,

There are no entries in the PSI report now for iTunes--I've got a score of 100%. I guess that means I've removed the vulnerability, but I cannot download version 10.5. According to my list of currently installed programs, I still have version 10,4 on my computer, but I am unable to uninstall, change or repair it without getting the messages I mentioned in an earlier post. I am at a loss....

taffy078,

Thanks for your recent reply. I did visit the site you provided, but when I returned to the site the following night, I was unable to find the regedit info again. Can you provide that link once more?

@chaddie1.

what I'd looked at was previously on comments about v10.5. which is where that link pointed.

Since then, the link has changed and now points to the latest version, v10.5.1.

This is the new link to what I saw:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_itunes_32/commen...

You'll see the regedit suggestion, as well as all the other problems that users were having.

Let us know how you get on.

PS Now that you seem to have removed iTunes completely, have you tried installing it from Apple's site?
http://www.apple.com/uk/support/itunes/

(I've not looked at their forum - I bet though that there'll be other threads there like this!)

Could it be that you've got progs installed on another drive other than C which psi is monitoring ? psi is basically saying that you've now got no vulnerabilities on that drive......but if you've still got the prog installed elsewhere.....your pc could still be insecure. Might you have previously set any Ignore Rules ?
Do you use Revouninstaller ?
You can get the Freeware 1.93 version from here :-
http://www.revouninstaller.com/revo_uninstaller_fr... go to the bottom of that page to download.
To use it to uninstall; obviously, it first has to show the prog instance. If it does, there are different levels of removal procedure....to find/remove any left-over files found in the registry.

Hi Chaddie. I've just installed the update from filehippo, whose Update Checker alerted me to it.

The update went quickly and without any problems so I then re-scanned

= big problems!!!

http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/117...

I'm sure that the iTunes update can't be the cause of these scan/log-in problems - can it?!!!!!

Interestingly,

File hippo does not show I need an update for version 10.5--but my control panel says I have version 10.4 installed. Is this because I've downloaded the 10.5 installer from File hippo, but am unable to use it to install version 10.5 on my computer? I think this is my problem. I have already followed moqs' advice, but still can't install version 10.5. I still am unclear about your "regedit" method. Do I uninstall all of the quicktime files I see in the list?

I do not think this is my problem, but I'll look into it. I believe my applications are installed on only one drive, and I've set no ignore rules.

Here's an extract from the Cyberclips thread :-

Posted in Malware, 17th November 2011 14:12 GMT

Apple has updated its iTunes software to correct a security shortcoming that offered the potential for miscreants to mount man-in-the-middle attacks and appears to have played a central role in the infamous Ghost Click botnet scam.

iTunes 10.5.1, released on Monday, is a cross-platform update that addresses a flaw that's most acute on Windows systems. Prior to the update, hackers had the potential to intercept update queries between the iTunes client on a user's Windows machine and Apple. This might have been abused to offer a Trojaned version of iTunes, or more likely and much easier to pull off redirect surfers to a site punting fake anti-virus (AKA scareware) or running click-fraud scams.

You can read more at post 86 here :-
http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/116...

Given that psi is not showing any vulnerability, and yet you have other/older files showing in Control Panel ( whether on C or not )......I think I'd be inclined to try to remove them all and start afresh. Did you look to see whether Revo identified them or not ?

moqs,

I downloaded Revo and uninstalled all the registry items it identified as being associated with itunes, and I was still unable to download version 10.5. (I also uninstalled version 10.4.)

Chaddie.

To recap then......so you now have no vulnerabilities in psi ; and no Apple iTunes entries in Control Panel nor Revo either ?

moqs,

Eureka! After using Revouninstall to remove all entries for iTunes in the registry, and installing version 15.1 from the Apple website, I now have the new version, tho I haven't tried it out yet.

I want to thank you and taffy078 for your time and energy. Happy Holidays!

That's good news Chaddie !
I presume that's a misprint in your post tho', and version 10.5.1 for XP is what you now have ?
Once you are satisfied and have checked that iTunes is up and running okay....remember that you can close this thread by pressing Accept....that will prevent reminder e mails and tag-on posts to this thread.
Hope too that you familiarize yourself with Revo; as there's a few useful tools in it to help keep your disc free of junk and what not.....I use the Evidence Remover once a week....wipes the disc of previously deleted traces and reclaims free space.
Good luck and regards,
