When PSI 3.0 beta is running, Diskeeper will not auto-defrag the boot volume - Drive C. Other hard drives do get defragged. If I use Windows Defender to keep the PSI 3.0 beta from starting, things work as designed.

Info on my copy of Diskeeper is below:

Build: (15.0.966.0)

I can help diagnose this if U like?

If U want help I require a bit more detail.

1. Which paid for version of Diskeeper are U using? Home Edition or Professional?

2. Is it a 32 or 64 Bit version?

3. Can U explain a little more on what U mean by Boot Volume. Do U mean C drive defragmentation is not taking place or Boot Time Defragmentation is disabled?

4. Try a manual analyse on the C drive.Do U get an error message?

5. Have U got the "stop/start log activated? If so the results are in the Windows Event Log. Are there any Diskeeper entries there?

To date I am not receiving any issues with Diskeeper on my test PC which has the PSI BETA version installed.

1. I am using Diskeeper 2011 Pro.

2. 32 bit version

3. Automatic defrag of the C: drive does not take place.

4. Manual defrag of C: works fine. No error messages.

5. Not sure what "stop/start log activated" means. There are entries in the Windows Event Log for Diskeeper. I don't see anything that looks like an error message.

I first noticed this symptom with the previous version of PSI back in January 2012. I worked some with Diskeeper support to try to figure out what was amiss. They couldn't reach a conclusion as to what caused the problem. Through a process of trial and error, I discovered that if PSI wasn't started that things worked O.K.

Since then, I do not start PSI unless I'm ready to do a scan. I had downloaded the beta in hopes that the symptom wouldn't reappear. No such luck.

Thank you for the clarification.

I can fully understand your thought process that your trouble could be caused by PSI.

That said, I have Diskeeper installed on various machines that use various variants of PSI. I have never had any problems.

If U open Diskeeper the Dashboard has 3 tabs. Click on logs. Is that log up to date? By that I mean is there a daily entry of activity on Drive C?

On the top row there are tabs that tell how Drive C is being managed. The headers are
Volume-Status-File System-Size-Free Space-IntellWrite-Automatic Defrag-I FAAST-Boot Time Defrag & Volume Shadow Copy.

Can U confirm the data under some of those headers.
1. Is there free space available?
2. IntellWrite & Automatic defrag are enabled?
3. I FAAST & Boot Time Defrag are disabled?
4. Volume Shadow Copy is present?

Event Logging
On the top row of the Dashboard is an icon with 3 cogs (red-blue-yellow). Click that & from the drop down box select Event Logging>in the right pane U will now see a full list of events U can tick (check mark) - whatever items U tick there will be displayed in the Windows Event Log which is helpful to diagnose issues.

I cannot see any result from carrying out a manual ANALYSE. Look at the top row of icons - the centre one (a disk with red magnifying glass)>cursor over & it tells U it is ANALYSE>activate it> does it analyse or do U get a boxed error message?

1. 35% free space is available.
2. IntelliWrite and auto defrag are enabled.
3. I Faast and Boot Time Defrag are disabled.
4. Volume Shadow Copy is not present. I have no VSS enabled volumes.

Most items in the Event Logging are checked. There are no unusual entries in the Windows Event Log. I've been down this road before with Diskeeper support, but It never hurts to look again.

Manual ANALYZE works.

Now for some new information. I have two other Windows XP SP3 PCs that run the old PSI and the same version of Diskeeper that I use on the problem PC. There is no issue with the other two systems. They're all running virtually identical software with one exception. The PC with the issue typically has AOL IM up and running. It appears that if both AOL IM and Secunia PSI are running, Diskeeper won't auto-defrag the boot volume (Drive C:). At the moment, I am not running AOL IM and it appears to be doing an auto-defrag on Drive C:

I'll post more info later.

I had version 7.5.8.2 of AOL IM installed. I downloaded and installed version 7.5.11.9 and the issue seems to be resolved.

Diskeeper mysteriously quit auto defragging the C: drive after Jan 5, 2012. I didn't update anything at that point in time. As I said earlier, it was through trial and error that I stumbled onto
a work around of not running Secunia PSI all the time.

Looking Good - Are U saying U consider this issue is completely resolved & that AOL may have been the culprit?

Are U aware that Diskeeper as a Company have had a name change & revamp?

I don't know for sure that everything is resolved. I can verify that auto-defrag takes place now on Drive C: Something is still causing a high level of fragmentation on the C: drive. The System Volume Information file is very highly fragmented.

I'll keep looking. Maybe there is a yet another culprit at large.

If U run a manual analyse is there no clues in the job report?

Manual analysis consistently shows that the most fragmented files have to do with System Volume Information. There is nothing else that jumps out in the Job Report.

Auto-defrag is running and something is creating a lot of fragmentation.

U may wish to look at this for System Volume Information:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309531

Have U got an overload in restore? Deleting some may help or lower the quoter.

I do not have system restore activated so cannot give too many pointers.

Hi ,

If it helps , when I had System Restore enabled , it used to require a huge amount of defrag .

I have uninstalled the Beta. the module psia.exe was active at over 95% CPU for almost an hour until I cancelled it. I saved the psialog.txt file if someone would like to see it.

Other observations:

1) No way to CANCEL a scan once it starts.

2) No way to control which drives/partitions are scanned.

3) No way to easily determine which programs were scanned.

Highly unlikely Secunia Support will see it on this thread which was dealing with BETA/Diskeeper.

Perhaps better U post to the main BETA thread here for general observations:
