U have not stated if U are using the 32 or 64 version of Office 2010. After selecting the correct version from these options try a reinstall of those updates from here: Excel http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/search.asp... Visio Viewer http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/search.asp... Once complete reboot & then complete a full PSI scan. -- Maurice Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit OS HP Intel Pentium i7 IE 10 for Windows 7 SP1 16GB RAM |

I am unclear which version (32 or 64 Bit) of Office U are running. Open Excel as if U were creating a spreadsheet. Select File>Help - Look in the right panel: Under the header ABOUT MICROSOFT EXCEL U will see various bits of information. 1. Does it say version 14.0.6112.500 (32 Bit) or 64Bit 2. Click the line Additional Version & Copyright Information - part of that information revealed should read "Microsoft Excel 2010 (14.0.6117.5003)SP1 MSO (14.0.6112.5000)" Is yours the same? -- Maurice Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit OS HP Intel Pentium i7 IE 10 for Windows 7 SP1 16GB RAM |

I'm having exactly the same difficulty. PSI tells me that both Microsoft Visio 2010 Viewer and Microsoft Excel 2010 are insecure. According to the Excel Help display, my copy of Excel is Click-to-Run version 14.0.6120.5002. The actual excel.exe file gives the version as 14.0.4756.1000. The VPREVIEW.EXE executable lists the version number as 14.0.4750.1000. When I attempt to run that program by double-clicking on the executable, I receive the message "This program can only run from within another program." Since I don't have any Visio files (I never use Visio), I can't get to the version number from its Help screen (if it has one). I have run Windows Update several times since PSI began flagging these programs as insecure, and it tells me that no Windows or Office updates are available for my system. I'm no expert, but it would seem that PSI is looking only at the (old) version number of the executable, whereas (at least with the Click-to-Run edition), the actual program is up to date and displays a much higher version number, one that is higher than the version PSI is reporting as the one I need (14.0.6117.5003). I'm running the 32-bit version of Office. --Larry |

An overview of Microsoft Office Click-to-Run for Office 2010: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982434 Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Business (Click-to-Run edition) came pre-installed on my Dell Studio XPS 9100 PC purchased in February 2011. I don't believe it came with an installation DVD, at least I can't find one. The product is designed to be downloaded (and kept updated) via a broadband connection directly from Microsoft. This is the product Dell provided (at least at the time, I have no idea what they offer now) when a customer ordered a new PC and also included Microsoft Office with the order. I just found the card with the Product Key. It's not that helpful. It calls the product simply Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010. It includes the following wording: "The manufacturer of your personal computer has licensed the Microsoft products listed on this card. This certificate of authenticity is your assurance that the following Microsoft products you have received are legally licensed to you from Dell." The reverse side of the card gives a Dell part number of Dell P/N 037VHG. --Larry |

I just did a search for EXCEL.EXE, and just one copy appeared, in: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Officer14 where I expected it. In any case, these "Insecure" flags from PSI cropped up sometime in the past week or so, never before, and no substantial changes have been made to any Office programs on this PC in a long time. Checking Windows Update's Update History list, the last Office-specific update that was applied was an Update for Microsoft Office 2010 (KB2553141) 32-bit Edition on 02/15/12, months before PSI began flagging Excel and Visio Viewer as insecure. For what it's worth, I run anti-malware and antivirus software on this PC, and I've done several scans for problems with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and no problems have appeared. --Larry |

Once again, thanks for looking into this. The only issue I see is the fact that PSI suddenly began flagging my copies of Excel and Visio Viewer as insecure. As far as I'm aware, and I've been looking into this aspect over the past couple of days, my PC and the resident software are completely up to date. At least in regard to Excel, the version reported by the Help screen is the latest and greatest available from Microsoft. The mystery seems to be the discrepancy between the (really really old) version reported when I display Properties for the EXCEL.EXE executable (which is the same as recently reported by PSI) and the version reported in the Excel Help display (which I'm convinced is the current correct version number for Excel). The REAL mystery is the fact that this discrepancy has existed for well over a year as far as I can tell, whereas PSI has only recently flagged it as a problem. As far as Microsoft Answers is concerned, I wouldn't know what to look for, since other than the PSI report, everything seems fine on this end. :-) --Larry |

As I've stated in previous posts, the Excel version number reported by PSI is not the same as the version actually reported on the Excel Help screen. The Excel Help screen reports the following information: Click-to-Run Product Updates -------------------------------------------------- Updates for this product are automatically downloaded and installed. Click-to-Run version: 14.0.6120.5002 About Microsoft Excel -------------------------------------------------- Version: 14.0.6112.5000 (32-bit) Additional Version and Copyright Information The underlined entry above is a hyperlink; when I click on it, a new window appears, with the following information: Microsoft® 2010 Trial (14.0.6117.5003) SP 1 MSO (14.0.6112.5000) Part of Microsoft Office Home and Business 2010 This is followed by a long list of other trademark and copyright information. Please note that the version number reported for Microsoft® 2010 Trial is the same as the latest version you specified in your last post. And, no, I have no idea why the word "Trial" is in there. It's been that way since I received the PC with MS Office 2010 pre-installed. At the risk of repeating myself, nothing has changed on this PC, especially in regard to my installed copy of Office, in several months. Until less than a week ago, PSI gave the PC and everything on it a 100% "clean" rating. If I've been running an ancient, out-of-date copy of Excel all this time as you seem to be implying, why did PSI give me a 100% rating before now, then suddenly start flagging Excel and Visio Viewer as insecure only within the last week? --Larry |

I'm not sure whether this will help or confuse things even further, but here are two more bits of information concerning my situation: I went to the Start menu and found Microsoft Excel 2010 in the "All Programs" list. I right-clicked on the icon and selected Properties. The Target listed in the Shortcut tab is given as follows: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft Excel 2010 9014006204090000" I have no idea what that actually means, but it certainly doesn't point to the EXCEL.EXE executable that PSI is looking at for the version number. When I find the file CVH.EXE in Windows Explorer and look at its properties, this file has a creation date of January 4, 2012, and shows a file version of 14.0.6114.5003. Also, a Microsoft Office 2010 Click-to-Run installation includes creation of a virtual(?) drive named "Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010". This drive is marked as "(Protected)", and when I try to access the drive contents, I get an error message that reads "Q\ is not accessible. Access is denied." I've never been able to see the contents of this "drive" and have no idea what's hiding within it. --Larry |

I thought it might be informative to check out the other four programs in my Office suite, Word 2010, PowerPoint 2010, Outlook 2010, and OneNote 2010. None of these other programs are flagged by PSI as insecure. Here is a summary of what I found out about each of these programs: -------------------------------------------------- WORD 2010 START MENU SHORTCUT POINTS TO: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft Word 2010 9014006204090000" WINWORD.EXE executable: Version 14.0.5123.5000 08/12/10 9:51 PM Version reported on Help screen: 14.0.6112.5000 (32-bit) -------------------------------------------------- POWERPOINT 2010 START MENU SHORTCUT POINTS TO: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 9014006204090000" POWERPNT.EXE executable: Version 14.0.4754.1000 03/09/10 9:57 AM Version reported on Help screen: 14.0.6112.5000 (32-bit) -------------------------------------------------- OUTLOOK 2010 START MENU SHORTCUT POINTS TO: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft Outlook 2010 9014006204090000" OUTLOOK.EXE executable: Version 14.0.4760.1000 03/23/10 11:57 AM Version reported on Help screen: 14.0.6112.5000 (32-bit) -------------------------------------------------- ONENOTE 2010 START MENU SHORTCUT POINTS TO: "C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft OneNote 2010 9014006204090000" ONENOTE.EXE executable: Version 14.0.4763.1000 03/30/10 9:29 AM Version reported on Help screen: 14.0.6112.5000 (32-bit) -------------------------------------------------- The situation with each of these programs is pretty much the same as the situation with Excel and Visio Viewer: The executables in C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\Office14 all have old version numbers with old dates, whereas the version displayed when each program is running is the latest and greatest (as far as I'm aware, anyway). The obvious question: If the situation is essentially the same for all the programs in the Office suite, why does PSI flag two of the components, Excel and Visio Viewer, as insecure, yet doesn't flag the other four programs as insecure? Also please note that the person who started this thread reported a problem with exactly the same two programs: Excel and Visio Viewer. What is PSI doing differently in regard to these two programs? --Larry |

I renamed the Visio Viewer executable and had PSI do a full rescan. The scan resulted in a 100% system score. I just discovered something that might help clarify this issue. I ran a program called Process Explorer, which I use in lieu of Task Manager. Among other functions, it provides detailed information concerning all programs and processes currently running. As I mentioned in a previous post, installation of the Click-to-Run edition of Microsoft Office includes creation of a virtual drive named "Microsoft Office Click-to-Run 2010". This drive is marked as "(Protected)", and I have no way (that I'm aware of) to peek inside this drive. In the case of my PC, this drive was assigned the drive letter Q. When I launch Excel and use Process Explorer to view the properties of the program while it's running, it shows the path as Q:\140062.enu\Office14\EXCEL.EXE. It also lists a "parent" of CVH.EXE(4480). It certainly looks as if the actual executables launched whenever I run programs in the Office suite reside on this virtual drive and not on my C: drive. --Larry |

Those files we have just renamed could be called "dead wood" but they are harmless now & should not cause any issues. Personally I would just leave everything as it is. After a few months of no hassle U might consider deleting the renamed files but personally I would just leave them. Do U require any more help? No, I do believe the issue has been resolved. Thank you for looking into this. Hopefully, this thread will help others who might be faced with the same situation. And I think I'll just leave things the way they are unless and until some other issue arises. --Larry |

I agree. If the other programme elements (outlook etc.) EXE files crop up in the future as insecure I would rename them like Excel & Visio. -- Maurice Windows 7 SP1 64 Bit OS HP Intel Pentium i7 IE 10 for Windows 7 SP1 16GB RAM |
