I find that the automatic scanning makes it very difficlt for me to use the pc at the time of scanning.

Is it possible for me to decide when to conduct the scans?

Is it also possible for PSI to inform me that a scan is due (say after seven days)?

Thanks

I notice that U have been advised about this issue previously. I will try and explain a few more options that PSI can offer but it looks like your (unknown) PC set up may be underpowered to cope with multi tasking hence the "drag".

As U will have noted U can control the scanner via the programme settings & your auto scan time via Scan Results.

1.The Scan Result Setting.

Open PSI>Scan your PC - click the link below for more details:

https://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pvac78QeHR1...

2. PSI Programme Settings

Open PSI>Configuration>Settings>PSI setting tab - explanations given in this link:

https://public.bay.livefilestore.com/y1p4dBTryuB6i...

3.An Alternative (The 10 minute per month option)

There is another option which I use but doubtful it is supported by Secunia as follows:

Install PSI a few days after "Microsoft Patch Tuesday".

Run a manual scan & fix, if necessary, any outstanding vulnerabilities.

Uninstall PSI until the next month.

I do not recommend this option unless U have the Secunia Advisories option activated in your Online Profile or by having programme update links set up DIRECT to all your installed programme vendors.

Hope this helps a bit more.

For multi tasking the simple answer is yes.

That CPU was introduced around 2005/6 & only has 1GB of physical RAM in support. Although U have not given me the exact CPU model I think it also has an integrated graphics card which also uses your limited RAM.

It is possible to speed things up if that is what U want.

1. U may be able to add more RAM. It depends on what your CPU supports & whether there are any additional slots available to install them. U can check by using this for example:

http://www.crucial.com/uk/

2. U can try to trim down what is using your resources by checking your start up programmes & processes.

Press CTRL+Shift+Esc and look at the processes running. U may find all sorts of bits running that may not be absolutely necessary & can therefore be switched off.

3. Which option U choose to run PSI is up to U but it will be slow if U are trying to work with other programmes at the same time particularly Microsoft Office/anything graphical or audio/IE 9 & Skype to name but a few.

All this is a bit "off piste" for this Forum but I hope it helps.

The best method for me to use would be do a manual scan when it is most convenient. But that would initiate a scan automatically after seven days. Is is possible to prevent the autoscans?

Would I benefit from Version 2.0.0.4003

I have 2.0.0.3003 acording to the Tray

Thanks

I would keep version 2.0.0.3003 - better Secure Browsing information if U ever require it.

The option U are looking for really is to untick all the settings boxes as shown in my pictorial.

Then U just manually load the programme & run a scan as & when U want.

Secunia default is 7 days between scans so that gives U a rough guide of how often to use it.

I am happy with a once a month scan - really a matter of personal choice once U stop the programme loading at boot.

Thanks for responding.

A couple of points, you say:

'I would keep version 2.0.0.3003 - better Secure Browsing information if U ever require it.'

Does not PSI just monitor my programmes to see if they need to be patched? I don't understand your reference to ' Secure Browsing information' !

Could I not stop the weekly scanning which appears to use a lot of my resources, and hence makes the pc unusable, by simply unchecking 'Start the Secunia PSI on boot' ?

Best wishes.

Secure Browsing.

Open PSI>Dashboard>Click on Secure Browsing

What U see there has much more detail in your current version than version 4003.
This information can be useful although Secunia do caveat that its use is for Advanced users.

An example is Adobe Flash & Microsoft MSXML 6.

On the Scan Results page both these items are showing as patched. As far as the user is concerned they are fully updated because no vendor patch exists to fully secure these programmes.

The Secure Browsing page tells different story.

Adobe Flash is vulnerable until such time as a patch is produced as shown here:
http://secunia.com/advisories/47161/

The same with Microsoft MSXML 6. A work around has been produced but it is vulnerable awaiting a proper patch as follows:

http://secunia.com/advisories/49456/

The Settings

Each setting has a description. My advice to date would prevent any "drag" on your limited resources. U can tweak them how U like. Having given U a description of Secure Browsing do U really want that activated for example?

It is all a matter of personal requirements & in your case resources. If need be try different setting combinations - it will not break PSI or Windows.

Hope this helps a bit more.
