OK, thought I would start this as a place to collect the community views as to what functionality it would be good to see in v3.0. Please do not just post a general comment "...as per PSI v2.0" but rather give some detail on the v2.0 functionality you think is missing from v3.0.

I will start the ball rolling by nominating:

1. Obsolescence notification & update; identification of a major version change in an app (that effectively renders that version obsolete and indication of/ability to update (if that is possible) to the replacement version. Perhaps this could be shown as a further category to add to "Up-to-date programs" & "Programs that need updating"?

2. More indication of what the new version proposed for update is; can currently investigate and see what the current version is but not what the proposed new version is.

3. Simple List view as a user selectable alternative to the icon view currently available; so as to allow more programs to be displayed on a page; perhaps a List view could be presented as an Advanced view, with more detail of the programs, etc., visible and retain the Icon view as a Simpler view?

What do you think?

Personally, I think Version 2.0 is perfect and like they say, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

In it's present form, Beta Version 3.0 is a "dumming down" from version 2.0.

I hate this silent package SPS install thing. I like seeing what is going on on my computer, not downloading some exe file, running it, and then having no idea what it is doing. I don't want some BS assurances that "it's totally cool, and we're just making it happen off screen." You may not be adding crap to the installs, but how do we know that the source installers aren't adding crap to them? We don't, because the opt out screens aren't being seen anymore. I want progress bars, I want installer options, I want control over my own goddamn computer. I've downloaded 4 of these SPS things in the last week, and had absolutely no idea why they didn't seem to work until I started searching for what was going on. They really don't work, btw. It's been 3 days since I tried running the java update, and PSI still shows it as out of date. Nice job. I'll be going to Oracle's site now and installing it correctly like I always have, because that actually works.

I don't like automatic updates, and I don't like crap like this stuff trying to run without any input from me, the user, the person who should be given enough respect by the software companies to make our own damn decisions. If I set your program to not automatically install updates, then you should be providing me with links to the actual installers produced by the actual software vendors, not your "hey we made it easy" hidden interface crap because you think we're too stupid to do it on our own.

Do not know what exactly the v3.0 beta offers apart from a fancy initial appearance and a total loss of control by the user?

Certainly v2.x is a great product. V3.0 is a beta so if it simply demonstrates what a simple interface might look like for basic users, then fine, absolutely assuming that the advanced interface will continue to be available, then fine.

However, if this is the way the product is going, then whoa - hold it right there guys!!!

P.S. Not sure what is under the hood - re improvements to the patching / updating technology etc.

P.P.S. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, extend it!!

Cheers

I totally agree about the "new and improved" installers. Either they don't work, or they work in mysterious ways. At any rate, you have no idea what's going on because they operate in the background. Please bring back the tried and tested "old-fashioned" method of linking to software manufacturers' websites, giving us a chance to see what, when and how we're installing.

I posted about PSI 2.0 issues just yesterday. Today I installed PSI3.0 Beta and it managed to install the 3 pending updates (2 for Java, 1 for Winamp) that I had complained about. However, I much preferred the PSI 2.0 advanced interface as I felt in a lot more control than I do with PSI 3.0 which is definitely dumbed down. PSI 2.0 just need fixing, not dumbing down.

From the reviews, the UI has been dumbed down (which means removal of features) far too much to make V3 a techie-friendly product. Unless that changes radically, I will continue with 2.0 as long as possible, then seek out an alternative if at all possible.
