Hi,

I have PSI (previous version, that is 3.0.0.2004) installed on different computers - my own, my parent's etc. On some of these I have noticed that the first scan is very slow, but this has been addressed in other posts and as I have understood also been fixed in the latest version.

I have also noticed that when auto-updates are turned on and PSI runs in the background (updating) the system can be a little slower, but not to a degree that is upsetting.

However, today my OS (Windows 7) was not able to startup completely. That is, I got to the desktop, but the mouse pointer first froze, and when it finally "woke up" again, the taskbar was unresponsive. Even trying to access the task manager was impossible. At the same time the harddisk was working as if performing a scan or something similar. I wated a long time (until a few minutes after the harddrive had stopped making noises) but nothing happened. I tried restarting the computer twice (hard restart by pressing the on/off button which was my only option), but the problem continued.

The only program, I have, that performs this type of regular system scan of the entire harddisk is PSI, so I quickly came to suspect that PSI was performing a scan (perhaps installing necessary updates) and this blocked the system to a point where the entire OS stopped performing. I tried restarting in safe mode without problems. Here I then disabled PSI at startup, restarted, and everything worked fine. So, the culprit was identified.

Knowing from experience that PSI is sometimes updated to a newer verion without announcement and without being very clear at the download page (it just states "version3.0", not the entire version number), I identified my version as 3.0.0.2004 and the latest build as 3.0.0.3001. I then installed the latest version, but disabled automatic updates as I have a feeling that this was what blocked the startup of my OS. I then performed the initial scan without problems.

I have not yet restarted my computer with the new installation/settings. In any case PSI should not perform any scan when restarting, as it has just made a complete scan. I will however write, if the system still is blocked once I restart.

I looked at the changelog for "my" error but didn't find it (unless its categorized under "minor bug fixes").

My 2 questions are therefore:

1. Is this a known issue or am I the only one? I tried looking a bit in the forum, but didn't find anything.
2. If it is a known issue, has it then been addressed in version 3.0.0.3001? In other words, can I turn on automatic updates again without fearing a lot of work rebooting and deactivating?

I'm using PSI- version 2.0.0.4003. its the stable version. I guess version 3.-.-. is still more under construction then its precessor.

To avoid confusing by (other) end-users (in ur family, organisation) its perhaps recommandable to install PSI version 2.0.0.4003 to the pc's of those end-users, including 1 Pc u use by urself for general purpose. If u want to test PSI-version 3.-.-.- , install PSI-version 3.-.-.- to 1 (test)Pc in a test-configuration/ -envrionment, to see whats happening and what can be, should be updated to PSi-version 3.

I hope I could help u a bit, with the procedure how to use new software, that is still in its beta-version.

with kind regards,

Gustar Terpstra

I think you are right :)

There is no way my parents or parents-in-law will be able to tackle the problem like I just did (safe mode etc.).
I don't know excatly why, but I was under the impression that PSI version 2.x was discontinued once version 3.x was introduced, but this is not the case?

Also, I had no idea that version 3.x is still in beta. Is this really so?

PSI 3 is out of BETA & has been for some time.

PSI 1 & 2 are fully supported.

The links to other PSI versions are tucked away here:

https://secunia.com/products/consumer/PSI/sys_req/

or there are more download link variants of these supported versions below my Signature Block.

If U want full Secure Browser disclosure for example U require version 2.0.0.3003 rather than 2.0.0.4003.

Hope this helps.
