Installed Version 4.20.;9876.0
Secured Version 4.3.2100.0

Click this link
http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.as...

Once open activate the clearly marked download link called MSXML.MSI - 2.3 MB.

Once installed run Windows Update - there are some additional patches for MSXML 4 SP3.

On completion PSI will show MSXML 4 as secure with version 4.30.2114.0. after a full PSI rescan

************************************************** ************************************************** ********************

Unless I am wrong this is the link I follow am I correct?

Do you have any idea why it does not show up in the MS Updates?

Finally in simple as possible plain old English what is it and what does it do?

Thank you very much

@Keith

The link you are choosing looks correct .....as you state you have the version starting with 4.2 already present.
All I know , is that it must be downloaded manually, and was'nt available thro' Windows Update.

What it is ?....A brief description .........
Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) is a set of services that allow applications written in JScript, VBScript, and Microsoft development tools to build Windows-native XML-based applications..........reference from Wikipedia.

Hope it helps.....but if you are still uncertain.....Maurice will probably view this thread at sometime later.....and be able to give you the benefit of his much greater expertise.

Regards.......

1 Upgrading to the MSXML 4.0 SP3

The following are important notes about proper installation of MSXML 4.0 SP3:
This is one for Maurice then.

What the ????? (Aussie slang)

Where and what do I do now.

Regards Keith

· MSXML 4.0 SP3 is not installed or upgraded by default.

· To properly install or upgrade to MSXML 4.0 SP3, download and run the setup package.

· The SDK is not shipped alongside the setup package since the interfaces are not changed. Developers can use the header files from the MSXML6 SDK and refer to MSDN for documentation.

In order to rolling back from MSXML 4.0 SP3 to MSXML 4.0 SP2, a customer can download MSXML 4.0 SP2 MSI package and

· Uninstall all MSXML 4.0 products in the system, then re-install MSXML 4.0 SP2, or

· Use command line “msiexec msxml4sp2.msi /fdmus” in the same folder of the MSI package.

What do you do now?

From http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.as... download and run msxml.msi. When you have successfully installed it, run Windows Update to get it up to date.

Now I am completely confused and this is why.

Installed Version Secure Version
Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 3.x 1 .8.110.7601.17857

Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 4.x 1 4.30.2100.0 4.30.2110.0

Microsoft XML Core Services (MSXML) 6.x 1.6.30.7607.17857

I installed these then I restarted the computer to do a MS Update but "No Updates Required"

I came back and Check to update each one of these and nothing happened.

What is happening of have I missed something?

Keith,
I am not sure what the confusion is. @Mogs & @ddmarshall have pointed to the update you want.

Your MSXML 3 & 6 are up to date.

MSXML 4 remains out of date.

All you have to do is install this patch manually.

http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.as...

Once that patch is installed run Windows update & it will indicate the new SP you have just installed requires updating.

Once all is updated run a full PSI scan & you are secure.

EDIT
Just noticed something odd - why are you now showing two versions of MSXML4 as being installed - is that what PSI claims?

What entries have you got in Control Panel>add/remove for MSXML4?

Hello Maurice

Just noticed something odd - why are you now showing two versions of MSXML4 as being installed - is that what PSI claims?

I tried to do a Copy and Paste of Secunia that is why I wrote it that way.

What entries have you got in Control Panel>add/remove for MSXML4?

No need to do this now or do you want me to do it for you
**********************************

See if you can work this out then after all that and rechecking MS update several times, this morning Wed 7/Nov I was told I had to do an update by MS

I did the down load as usual nothing strange in that, I did not have to do a restart either.

Then all of a sudden I have a Green Secunia in the low RH task bar.

Next I checked Secunia 100% none of those (3) updates required.

This is what MS updated
Security Update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 3 (KB2721691)
Installation date: ‎7/‎11/‎2012 11:17 AM
Installation status: Successful
Update type: Important

Summery I have no idea what has happened I followed as per instructions nothing happened then the next day I did the MS update now every thing is perfect.

Keith,
Pleased to see you are now OK - to answer your original question this is the background to MSXML.

WINDOWS MSXML BASIC DETAILS

MSXML 6.0

MSXML6 is the latest MSXML product from Microsoft, and along with MSXML3 is shipped with Microsoft SQL Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005, .NET Framework 3.0, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows XP Service Pack 3. It also has support for native 64-bit environments. It is an upgrade but not replacement for versions 3 and 4 as they still provide legacy features not supported in version 6. Version 6, 4, and 3 may all be installed and run concurrently. Windows XP SP3 includes MSXML 6.0 SP2.

MSXML 5.0

MSXML5 is a binary developed specifically for Microsoft Office. It originally shipped with Office 2003 and also ships with Office 2007. It is not part of Office 2010 or Office 2013. Microsoft has not released documentation for this version as they consider it an internal/integrated component.

MSXML 4.0

MSXML4 was shipped as an independent, downloadable SDK targeted at Independent Software Vendors and third parties. It is an upgrade for but not a replacement to MSXML3 as version 3 still provides legacy features. Versions 4 and 3 may be run concurrently.

MSXML 4.0 SP3 is the most recent version released in March 2009. SP2 support expired in April 2010.

Please note this SP was released before Windows 7 was produced therefore there is no mention of compatibility - it works flawlessly with Windows 7 on both 32 & 64 Bit systems I have not tested it with Windows 8.

MSXML 3

MSXML3 is a current MSXML product, represented by msxml3.dll. MSXML 3.0 SP2 first shipped with Windows XP, Internet Explorer 6.0 and MDAC 2.7. By default, Internet Explorer version 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 use MSXML 3 to parse XML documents loaded in a window. Windows XP SP3 includes MSXML 3.0 SP9. Windows Vista also includes MSXML 3.0 (SP10).
