When I powered up this morning, the usual "Windows Updates are ready to be installed - click on the icon" message appeared, with the yellow shield. But it disappeared after a few seconds.
So I went to Windows Update - nothing needed, all OK.

The Secunia icon was red so I clicked on that and ran a scan - 100%, so no problem there and of course the red icon has been known to appear for no reason before so I wasn'y concerned.

So I thought I'd post and ask if anyone else had the Windows icon issue. After scanning, I clicked on the Support/Forum and Visit forum links - as normal. But a "Community Login" window appeared - I've not seen it before. My Norton Identity Safe/Vault auto-filled the Login details but the two buttons at the bottom of the Community Login window were hidden - only the tops of the buttons were showing. I couldn't move the window upwards and when I clicked on the top of the left button it said incorrect logon details.

In the end, I had to restart my PC and from there I accessed Secunia and the forum with no problems.

Did anyone else have these issues please?

PS I had no problems yesterday installing the large number of Windows updates.

Hi taffy ,

After an M$ update and reboot the shield icon often "(re)appears" whilst it checks whether you are updated , need to reboot , etc . If you are correctly updated it will disappear until the next time .

The Community log-in box is normal if you try to log-in by visiting the website direct . You can see it if you "zoom" out/-ve using your browser settings .

Take care

Anthony

Thank you Anthony - it gets worse! I clicked on the Secunia icon just now - it took 45 seconds for the PSI 2.0 red PC to appear, the the 'verifying internet connection stuck on one red square for four minutes before I ended the attempt - peacefully!

What makes it worse is that two days ago, BT Infinity was installed - down speeds were 35 MB and 9 MB up on the day. Just now they were 8.5 MB down and 5.7 MB up.

At this moment the BT Beta tester shows 17.78 MB down and 7.76 MB up.

These speeds are so much faster (previously 1.6 MB & 0.6 MB respectively) but the new fibre optic Infinity shouldn't affect logging onto PSI should it i.e. I don't need to adjust any Secunia settings do I?

Reboot the hub & it should re-establish the true speed. This happened to me after first install.

EDIT

I assume you are using this speed tester which is Flash based rather than the other BT offering which requires Oracle JAVA?
http://speedtester.bt.com/beta/speedtest-remote.js...

No setting changes for PSI use are necessary.

Internet surfing speed will improve but not the processing power of information on your PC - that is dependant on OS in use,CPU power & RAM installed.

My test revealed that PSI opens in about 2 seconds & a full manually activated scan takes about 8 seconds for 125 items - nothing like the timing you are quoting.

yes, Maurice, that's the Beta tester that I used.
It happened again just now. When I powered up, there was no Secunia icon on my bottom tool-bar. I loaded Secunia from "Start/all programs" - after six minutes it was still stuck on one red box of the "verifying . . . " stage. During this stage I tested the speed (this time with Broadband Watchdog) - 21.29 MB Down and 5.89 MB up. Would the speed test have affected the 'Verifying connection' stage?

I ended the program and re-ran it - no problems the second time. I'll re-boot the hub, as you suggest.

The answer to that is no. Your FTTC broadband speed should not be affected whatever you do. As a test I have just run PSI,carried out a speed test & downloaded a test 226MB application at the same time.

Results.

1. PSI opened instantly. Scan result here are near normal https://akkkug.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pjbDve0XXvn...

2. Nivida 226MB file saved to desktop in about 22 seconds.

3. FTTC running at 77.45 downstream - 18.75 up.

I would reboot the hub - that speed appears low for this time of the day. I assume your are BT Option 1 - 40 down max & 10 up? Is the PC in use hard wired or wireless?

Thanks Maurice - I'll check what I should be getting later - will also run the speed tester again. We had a power failure yesterday and I had to restart bothe the hub and the server. Was very fast afterwards, as you predicted!

I'm still having big problems getting into Secunia (PSI 2.0) via the icon. I aborted the first attempt after ten minutes and then clicked on a link in a "Thread Updated" email from Secunia. That took me through immediately.

When I tries via the icon again, this time, It took seven minutes. Someone else has just reported the problem:
http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/135...

ANyone else having this?

Once again I cannot confirm this. I have tested PSI version 2.0.0.4003 on a 32Bit OS with 2GB of RAM like you & PSI version 2.0.0.3003 on this PC.

Both appear to be working normally.

https://akkkug.bay.livefilestore.com/y1pIIlQwCWBAJ...

Is your browser working at speed or is that slow as well?

I have the same problem (here: https://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/13...) but was led to this thread.

For me, its really slow - not only 45 seconds, it can take up to several minutes - usually I kill the task then. The whole time I see the logo and "loading...". It has become nearly unusable to be honest. I am using 3.0/4001 on Win7 build 7601 Ult., 64 bit.

My browser and everything else works normally and fast.

Why not try another version of PSI to see if that helps. More details & links to the installers are below my Signature Block

I tried all 3.x.x and 2.x.xversions. the last one working is 2.x.x.

So basically 3.x.x is screwed for me.

Meanwhile I tried the same "game" on two other machines: Another Win7 (Home Premium) and an old XP PC. Its the same for all three. Version 3 is unusable, unless am missing something obvious.

@Maurice 17th Nov 08:51

Just tested the speeds using IE8, my default browser:
Broadband Watchdog DOWN 15.19 mb UP 6.42mb
BT Beta: timed out!

Went via Firefox:
Broadband Watchdog DOWN 31.85 mb UP 6.26mb
BT Beta: DOWN 36.96 mb UP 8.42 mb Ping latency (?) 27.38 mb

I have noticed more problems and slow speeds with IE8 recently and assumed that the dastardly Microsoft were doing something naughty to incentivise me to upgrade to IE9, which would also mean an upgrade to Win7 from XP.

I imagine though that IE8 is creaking!

[Edit - added this:] I suppose I'm really asking whether I should follow lots of others and use Chrome!

Slimast: you're using Win7 but what browser?

I've just remembered that two or three months ago I upgraded my cable internet package with BT (my ISP & phone line provider.

I had problems and BT recommended that I install their version of IE8 - it was supposed to be 'tailor-made' for BTYahoo mail users. Si I installed it and immediately regretted it. It slowed down the speed.

I uninstalled it with Revo and then used Firefox to install the 'standard' IE8 from the internet. But when the blasted thin came to life it still said "Windows Internet Explorer provided by BT Yahoo!"

So perhaps it's that that's causing the trouble!

Should I try to uninstall and reinstall do you think?

EDIT

I think you need to look at various aspects before trying anymore tweaks for example:-

BT fitted a Modem to replace their old input socket. The Modem connects to your hub via a special RED ended ethernet cable. Do you ever switch either of these two off at the mains? Is the RED lead connected RED to RED from Modem to Hub?

Have you removed all the old filters from all your BT phone line sockets?

I think you have a Windows 7 laptop? Does that connect correctly? What is the measured speed of that? Is it wireless or hardwired?

What is showing in Control Panel>add/remove for IE8?

On all OS'es (WinXP-SP3 32bit, Win7-Home 64bit, Win7-Ultimate 64bit) I am using Mozilla Firefox 16.0.2. All systems are fully patched, meaning they have the latest browser for that platform installed. But I don't get how this should be related to CSI?!

While awaiting a reply I have done some tests for you using my 32 Bit Windows XP SP3 PC with IE8 as the default browser.

This is what I did.

1. Ran a speed check - as expected running at the same speed as outlined in my posts above.

2. Did a bit of test surfing - all looks good bearing in mind the CPU power & RAM installed.

3. Opened PSI - opened quickly.

4. Ran a full PSI scan - 2 minutes 10 seconds which is good for that PC.

5. Installed the BT Yahoo modified IE8 browser.

6. Repeated the tests 1 - 4 above - no change in that all aspects were satisfactory.

6a. I noted that Firefox,Adobe Flash & the "new" IE8 required updating. All done manually in very quick time.

7. Rescan with PSI giving the all clear which completed quickly.

8. Opened the Forum as an unregistered user by using the PSI internal link & RoboForm ToGo was flawless.

From the tests I have done it does not appear that any of these are the culprits for your woes:

1. PSI version 2.0.0.4003.

2. IE 8 or IE 8 (BT Yahoo Modified)

3. Norton Internet Security 2013 (I do not use the vault so not tested).
