Using Win XP Pro Media Center/SP3, Firefox v.3.0.6, and Adobe Flash Player: ActiveX control v.10.0.12.36 and Gen'l. Plug-in v. 10.0.12.37.
Got a pop-up telling me to update Adobe Flash Player. Secunia PSI has NOT notified me that I needed this update. Why not? (Read someplace that malware is being distributed thru an Adobe Flash Player update.) Is this a legitimate update notice?
Tried to go online. Use ISP carrier, ATT-Yahoo, accessed thru Firefox. Home page (http://att.my.yahoo.com/) is now scattered all over the screen. Current version of IE doesn't "scatter" my home page.
Can anyone advise me re. the Adobe update? By not updating Adobe Flash, is this why my home page in Firefox is scattered all over the screen? Thanks in advance! |

Beware of pop ups telling you update flash player, its used to install a program on your computer and will mess it up good. Its most likely the case here.
Got it once and it installed "Antivirus 2007" without my permission (other then the "Do you want to install flashplayer link" , impossible to uninstall. I had to use the Windows tool (forgot its name) to make my system the way it was 2 days before.

1) Can you tell me what Windows tool you used to uninstall the Flash Player update that was infected with malware?
2) CORRECTION: My Gen'l. Plug-in is v. 10.0.12.37 (and not .36).
Thanks! (JLK) |

Have U got Adobe Air installed? It appears on reading an Adobe forum that this programme has got a Flash Element 10.0.12.37.
I do not use the Adobe Reader or Air so cannot investigate on my machine.
Are U sure U have the Flash Player for Firefox installed & a separate one for IE?

As of now, for Firefox 3, the current version of Adobe Flash Player is 10.0.22.87. All other versions are obsolete and should be removed. Source: Adobe Flash Player download site.
For maximum privacy, visit the Adobe Flash Player Privacy Settings Page after you do the update.

I have just updated the other day, and now am using Adobe Air v.1.5.1.8210, Firefox v.3.0.6, and Adobe Flash v.10.0.22.87 on my PC laptop using Win Media Center Edition/SP3. So, I am up-to-date with those programs.
However, something is still trying to control my optical laptop mouse (Logitech v450). Drives me crazy trying to control it. I'll have to do a chat with Computer Associate's Internet Security Suite Plus 2009 tech support to ensure that all is OK on my computer. (Anti-spyware scan previously picked up "Ad.manager..." but CA's program removed it; may have other issues because of this trojan. Anti-virus scan never detected anything.)
Thank you to all who responded to my plight. |

I too have had a similar problem and I am running Maone "No Scripts" which I believe, is the only fix for the security threat now facing Adobe. I believe the threat is what is called "click jacking" unless there is a new Trojan people are talking about.. I currently run three anti-virus and three malware programs and none of them has detected anything wrong. For information on "click jacking" go to Hackademix.net. Hope this helps. Although,I have had the similar problem it does stabilize especially after shutting down and giving p.c. a rest. In defense, I also use Foxit reader as my main pdf reader unless Microsoft over rides it. Wish I could find a fix for that. |

Puget1--
Partial credit about CLickjacking. But Flash Player 10 also introduced FLash Cookies and the ability of a web site to activate your web cam and microphone to spy on you. Adobe has a Flash Player Privacy Settings Page. Visit it and forbid these security threats. And use NoScript plugin to prevent any Flash-based surprises on unfamiliar web pages.
After completely removing Adobe Reader with Revo Uninstaller, I have never had a PDF try to open with anything other than Foxit Reader.

(A) Infoworld.com Every week. Nice blogs, too. I strongly recommend Robert X. Cringeley for the humorous side of Tech. And for serious Windows information, Randall Kennedy's blog and Roger A. Grimes's Security Adviser blog. I pester these guys with comments all the time.
(B) PCWorld.com every week. News and reviews. Good on line Community, too.
(C) Windows Secrets.com or their free newsletter. Each Thursday except the fifth week of the month. They have a Security Baseline, but I would not take their recommendations too seriously.
(D) http://www.askwoody.com (Woody Leonhard's Windows Patch Watch blog). Every month just ahead of Microsoft's Patch Tuesday. More often if the other resources indicate a widespread or serious problem. Also check out Woody's Lounge (Windows and Office, plus other neat stuff) for another great on line Community.
(E) Secunia's own Forums. Every week.
That's about twenty minutes per day, including Secunia PSI runs. And I visit MS Updates manually only through Internet Explorer. As Woody Leonhard says, "Automatic Updates is for chumps." And NEVER download Microsoft's Optional Updates -- these have included some of the worst system-killers we have seen in these Forums.
Just keeping up with these on line resources has given me a wealth of knowledge. And I belong to two face-to-face local Computer User Groups. One of these groups also maintains a message board at Yahoo Groups.
I also would like to recommend the Kim Komando Radio Show and web site. But I don't think I would pay for the subscription. After all, Woody's Lounge and Secunia Forums are free to join, and any group can set up a Yahoo Groups Account.
But to get the latest version information, I check each week manually to see if any of my software has any updates whatsoever. (Note that Secunia OSI and PSI are not version checkers.) I use a lot of freeware, so not everything is listed by Secunia, and not all programs have automatic updaters. Kind of like security updating, which I also do manually, then run the Deepest Scans I can. Just two scanners -- Avast 4.8 and Super Antispyware. Total scan time is less than two hours, but your mileage may vary, as I place my data into a separate partition for security, privacy, and faster AV scans. Comodo Firewall doesn't scan, but it protects me if I update it weekly (or when its updates are available, which is not every week).
So how did I learn about Revo Uninstaller and nonstandard installation locations? Through uninstalling Symantec Norton products, Roxio's Media Creator Suite, and numerous Adobe products. All were disasters the first time I tried to get rid of them. I also learned about CCleaner when the Intel ProSet Wireless Driver on my laptop had a very bad update, part of which was Microsoft's fault. I had to start clearing out Windows Prefetch just to stay on line at one point, before the two patched Intel driver updates came out. Lovely stuff!! I act as my own technician, so there was no going to the Computer Repair Shop if anything went wrong.
Finally, I update Acronis True Image Home by checking into my Registered User Account. (They also keep track of all of my Registration Keys.) Their Acronis Tech Support Live Chat has helped me several times. They are helpful and get on line promptly, with no language barriers and no charge to registered users. I run True Image Home in Full Backup mode to an external hard drive every couple of weeks, although incremental backups cold also work for most home users. I also copy (by Windows Copy/Paste) my Acronis Backups to a second external drive, which I keep away from my computer. This is optional, but it does provide an additional layer of security and safety.
We learn through suffering, and Windows users suffer a lot! Whatever does not kill us makes us stronger -- and wiser, I hope!
Cheers!
