Hello

I think the OSI is scanning for Windows updates at 85%, it might have problems to connect to their server, try to open up windows update and make a scan there, and then try the OSI again.

I am experiencing the same issue. First scan (simple mode) makes it to 85% then just clocks. I am running Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 64-bit. Brand new laptop and I am also unable to run Windows Update as all Windows Update does is give me a blank white screen. So I decided to find an alternative to Windows Update which lead me to try Secunia PSI.

Tried IE security updates suggested by wr in http://secunia.com/community/forum/thread/show/152... and this did not solve the issue.

Any ideas?

The following steps are the latest version I know of to ensure connectivity to Secunias servers:

Secunia PSI needs to be able to connect to Secunia servers to complete its scanning. However, if you have configured
the security settings of your Internet Explorer, the Secunia PSI may be prevented from getting the scan results. To receive
your scan results, you need to do some changes to your Internet options.
To do this:
a. Open Internet Explorer.
b. Go to Tools>Internet Options>Security tab.
c. Select the Internet zone and click on the Custom Level button.
d. In Security Settings, go to the Scripting>Active Scripting option.
e. Make sure that Active Scripting is Enabled (rather than Disabled or Prompted).
f. Press OK then Yes.
g. Back in the Security tab, select the Trusted sites zone and click on the Sites button.
h. Look at the bottom of the page and take the tick from the box marked"Require server verification(HTTPS)for all site zones" then type in the following and press the Add button to add them to the Trusted Zone Sites list:
http:*.secunia.com
https:*.secunia.com
i. Press Close
j. Run the Secunia PSI again to view the scan results

If using a browser other than IE the settings can be accessed by clicking Start-Control Panel-Internet Options-then follow c thru j

Good luck & regards, wr

Using Firefox v3.0.10 and updated Internet Options per your instructions. Rebooted. Scan still sits at 85%.

Using Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite v8.0.298.035 with anti-virus module not installed. Using Avira AntiVir v9.0.0.394 for anti-virus. Also, Windows Defender was pre-installed.

Any other suggestions?

If the scan is in a continuous loop, it could be that the clock on your computer needs to be reset to the correct time/date.

The clock/time is correct. Current is Thursday May, 28,2009 7:10pm EST.

Not sure if this is related, but Windows Update does not work at all. When I try to initiate Windows Update using Start .. Windows Update all that happens is a new window titled "System and Maintenance > Windows Update" opens up and it is totally empty (i.e. white background only). Nothing happens .. no error msg .. nothing except the clocking icon. I leave it open for 15 minutes then try to "red x / close" it. That doesn't work so I CNTL-ALT-DEL and end process in Task Manager.

Thanks for your help!!

@jcarbott

Could be that BITS is not set to automatic.

Go to Start>control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services> Once U open services look for Background Intelligence Transfer Service (BITS) - This should be running at Automatic

If not highlight it>right click> from the window that appears is a dropdown box - select automatic

Thank You !!!! That worked for me.

BITS was set to "automatic (delayed)". Changed BITS service to "automatic", rebooted, and both PSI (simple) and Windows Update now work.

Interesting though .. I was curious and reset BITS back to "automatic (delayed)" an hour later after doing Window Update, rebooted, and PSI (simple) and Window Update both worked. Hmmm ?!?! Just to document what else changed on my computer I went to Windows Update .. View Update History and saw the following updates were applied:
1- KB915597 Definition Update for Windows Defender (Def 1.59.251.0)
2- KB915597 Definition Update for Windows Defender (Def 1.59.458.0)
3- KB971180 Update for IE8 Compatibility View List for Windows Vista for x64 based Systems.

So I wonder if one of these updates had something to do with my problem.

Anyhow, I'm back in business ... Thanks again.

Pleased it worked - my advice to to leave BITS at automatic. It has other functions that may be crippled if not set correctly.

Interesting enough I have just completed another post on Microsoft Update.

I assume U have it set on automatic. Although very much a personal choice I would set it to "Inform me when updates are available". That way U have total control of what is installed & it makes life simpler if an install goes "pearhaped"

OK. Changed BITS service back to "automatic".

Also, changed Windows Updates to "Download updates but let me chose whether to install them". Thanks, forgot to do that as that's what I have on my desktop.

p.s. love Secunia PSI - great tool. I am now cleaning up my desktop which I thought I had in pretty good shape, but am finding out a few more items that I overlooked.

Thanks again everyone for their help !!!

I think U should now be a little bit bolder and try the Advanced Mode!

PSI may give U a little reminder about advanced users ..... but do not let that put U off.

It is easy to use & U get the full benefit of PSI.

U may even find more insecurities. If U cannot fix them with the tools provided someone on this forum will help U.

Yes, indeed. I've already tried advanced mode and am cleaning up both of my machines here. Also, have recommended this tool to some of my friends already. Once again, great product.
