My first question when I hear of absolutely free software is always, "What's in it for them?" Nobody works for free, so why are they giving away this software? What ELSE does it do?

Anyway, based on a friend's recommendation I downloaded PSI 3.0.0.9015 and installed it on my workhorse Windows XP desktop computer. A little red icon appeared in my tray and when I hover over it it says "All programs are up to date." That is reassuring but not surprising because most of my applications are self-updating nowadays.

I double-clicked on the red icon. A window frame opened up and promptly went away again (before it even finished painting). I right-clicked on it and chose "Open Secunia PSI" and got the same results. I chose "Close Tray Icon" and tried to start Secunia PSI from my start menu with the same results.

I re-booted my computer (although nothing in the installation told me to). This time, hovering over the same little red icon in my tray yielded "You have programs that require manual updates." OK, so I again tried to open the main window. This time it opened, said "Loading" and then the MSIE "Stop running this script?" dialog popped up. I chose "No" but after a while it came back. So I chose "Yes." PSI was catatonic, so I closed it and opened it again--same results. I still haven't been able to get it to do anything useful

Check your settings are the same as those in the FAQs.

See the possible workaround for XP at the end.

Thanks, ddmarshall. At that page was the instruction:

Right-click the file “psi” and choose “Properties”. Go to the Compatibility tab and place a check at “Turn off advanced text services for this program”

I believe the file name should be psi.exe. I did that, but still got the MSIE non-responsive script error message. And yes, Scripting/Active Scripting is Enabled, the service Secunia PSI Agent is running and is started automatically.. I added "https://*.secunia.com" to Trusted Sites but that still did not solve my problem.

The Secunia servers may be down for maintenance. Try again after Secunia Support are in again on Monday. PSI will do nothing if it cannot contact the servers.

If you can't get PSI 3.0 to work, try PSI 2.0.

To answer your first question, it's an advertisement for the paid for products. It's the same business model as the free antivirus companies. Or it could be a front for the NSA.

I tried again on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, then gave up and uninstalled it. Not worth any more of my time.

@richpasco

What is your OS ?
Did you try as @ddmarshall suggested....installing psi 2.0.... and let it remove the previous version ?
Have you checked that psi and Agent have permissions in your firewall ?
There are oftentimes instances when one version is found more compatible than another....it may be worth giving a little more time to trying to resolve.

Regards......mogs.........

No, I didn't try the down-level version. And If I did I wouldn't expect 2.0 to uninstall 3.0, I would manually uninstall it first.

I don't use a software firewall. The only firewall between my PC and the world is my router, and doesn't know or care which apps provide its traffic.

I was testing PSI to see whether it would be suitable to recommend to a large community of lay users I support. I have already put way more time into fiddling with it than I would expect any of my users to invest.

@richpasco

My apologies for the XP oversight....and for wasting your time......It's not always obvious in the first instance that I've wasted mine.
Regards.....mogs..
