Hello,

I installed Secunia PSI for the first time: version 3.0.0.9016 on my system: Windows 7 Professional x64.
After installation I started the program. The start screen appears with the displayed information "Secunia PSI ... LOADING... VERSION 3.0...". But nothing further happens. I think the start screen will stay as long as the system is running.

What can I do to get the PSI 3.0 working properly ?

Thanks in advance
Carlo

Have you confirmed that your settings are all in order...that they conform to those in the FAQ here :-
The Secunia PSI won’t load the interface or won’t complete scanning. What can I do?
http://secunia.com/vulnerability_scanning/personal...

Have you tried re-booting since you installed ?

Regards.....mogs.........

Hello mogs,

yes I have confirmed that my settings are all in order with the mentioned FAQ entry "The Secunia PSI won't...".
I already checked it before and now for a second time.

Unfortunally the PSI still sticks on startup screen.

Do you have any further ideas what the problem is ?

I'm using "Avira Professional Security" on my PC but I could not found any hint which blocks the startup process of PSI.

Best regards,
Carlo

I have Avira pro too. Look at: Extra, Configuration, Internet protection, application rules. Secunia PSI should be 'allowed'. Can't guarantee that this is the root of the problem.

Extract from another thread from Carlo.

Hello,

unfortunately I pressed the "Accept" button on the thread " PSI 3.0 sticks on startup screen"... But the problem "PSI 3.0 sticks on startup screen" is still not solved.

St-DASOS, I renamed the psi exe which is marked as "secunia psi agent".
But the PSI still sticks on startup screen.

The dates to my system:

processor: Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q9400 @2.66 GHz
ram: 4 GB
system type: 64bit
operating system: Windows 7 Professional Service Pack 1

Are there any further hints to get the PSI running ?

Best regards,
Carlo

In the FAQ it states :-
If you are still having problems with the Secunia PSI, the services on which the Secunia PSI depends may have been disabled. To verify that they are running, type “Administrative tools” in the start menu search bar or open Administrative tools from the Control Panel.

Now click the Services tool and verify that the “Secunia PSI Agent” is listed and has its “Startup type” set to “Automatic”.

In my case, using Vista and psi 3.0.0.9016....there are two entries in Services
Secunia PSI Agent and Secunia Update Agent.... set to Automatic

In your case, is the Update Agent present as well ?

in my case only the entry for Secunia PSI Agent is available and set to Automatic.

Does the Secunia Update Agent to be inluded and how would I include this agent ?

Carlo,
Try a reinstall using this link:

http://secunia.com/PSISetup.exe

Let it run & it will automatically remove the older/previous version before installing the new.

If that does not solve the problem look at the files in Windows Explorer - are they the same as these?

https://1ncuig.bn1.livefilestore.com/y2pUUxaa92Ckr...

If they are correct it may be a good idea to create a clean PSI log file & post it to the Forum - @mogs can then check for differences for you.

Hi @carlodown33

Sorry if I wasn’t clear in my answer, by modify I meant.

( Right-click the file “psi” and choose “Properties”.
Go to the Compatibility tab and place a check at “Turn off advanced text services for this program”. Click OK.)

Stop secunia first, click exit in system tray icon, and start the program again.

I also have Secunia PSI Agent and Secunia Update Agent running. win xp pro.

Maurice,

I reinstalled the PSI program by using the mentioned link.

But it does not solve the problem.

Regarding the files in the screen shot "https://1ncuig.bn1.livefilestore.com/y2pUUxaa92Ckr...":
On my system I did not got the directory "SUA".
Further I got two additional files "psialog.txt" and "psialog.txt2".
The other files seem to be the "same".

I could create a clean PSI log file and post it to @mogs. But how can I post something to mogs ?

Best regards Carlo

Hi mogs,

sorry I got an german Win 7 version. I can not find an option like "Turn off advanced text services for this program” ?

After I reinstalled the PSI program the PSI status icon raised up an information "pop up" like "Check your internet connection...". I think the program has problems wiht the internet connection.
Perhaps this is the reason why the Secunia Update Agent is not running on my system.

But all other programs which are using the internet are working properly.

Best regards Carlo
PS: How can I post my PSI log to you ?

Below is a copy of an instruction from Support from some while back....I've never had to use it, but have passed it on to other users before...some of whom it's helped.
If you're okay with it, you could try :-

Are you comfortable with working with the command line? You need to execute the file "sua.exe" in the PSI directory with "-i -L" parameters.

First, open "cmd" as an administrative user. In Vista and Windows 7, you can type "cmd" in the Start menu and then right-click the icon to launch with elevated priviliges.

Then enter this command for a 32-bit system:
cd "C:\Program Files\Secunia\PSI"
And this command for a 64-bit system:
cd "C:\Program Files (x86)\Secunia\PSI"

Please be sure to exclude both quotes.

Then, run
"sua.exe -i -L"

After restarting the PSI, it should now work.

Hope this helps.

Edit:

Former helpers, please take note that if the "Secunia Update Agent" is missing from the list of services, that is almost positively the problem and should be addressed before other troubleshooting steps. Thank you kindly.

@mogs, Emil

thanks ! for the instructions now both services "Secunia PSI Agent" and "Secunia Update Agent" are running in the windows system.

But unfortunately the PSI program still sticks on startup screen...

I further switched off the services inside the Avira Professional virus program and and also switched off the windows firewall but it does not solve the problem.

Every time when I restart my windows system the PSI status icon in the startup bar raises an information "pop up" like "Check your internet connection...".
Perhaps the PSI program has problems with the internet connection ?

Do you have any further idea what I can do / try to solve the problem ?

Best regards

I too get the pop-up message 'bout checking the internet connection when the taskbar is being populated at Start up.....even when the connection has been made and the PSI icon has turned green...I still need to manually delete it.

It may be worth noting that some Windows7 users never did get sorted with earlier nor later versions of psi 3.0...some only found satisfaction with psi 2.0.
You could try installing psi 2.0...let it remove the previous.....if that works for you...at least you'll be able to scan.

@mogs,

ok, I installed the PSI 2.0 program.
But now the PSI 2.0 sticks on startup screen with and a pop up window raises with information "Unable to retrieve PSI user ID from Secunia. Please verify that you are able to connect to https://psi.secunia.com/..."

It seems the same source of problem ...no connection to secunia server is possible.
But all other programs on my system have no problem in connecting to the internet.

Do you have any idea what the problem is ?

Best regards,
Carlo

@showcatman,

I not really understand what do you mean with "...like i need to update some software manually. then nothing. win7 64 bit home version" ?
Do you have the same problems with PSI on your system or do you suggest to "update some software manually" (which software should be updated ?).

@Carlo,
I will try to help but this thread has become very confusing as to what is trying to be achieved.

Please confirm that when you boot the PC a green PSI icon appears in the Task Tray? When you right click on that icon & select OPEN SECUNIA PSI you see this & PSI stalls?

Perhaps the User ID is corrupt in the Registry.....Are you familiar with it at all ?
Start Menu.....Regedit.....HKEY_CURRENT_USER + "Software" subkey....Scroll down to +Secunia and then PSI ? You should then see a 50 character string against UserID up in the right hand panel.

There's a description as follows....what another user put on the forum, having had similar experiences :-
I had cause to do this myself recently, when the software for my broadband had multiple failures. Even after using Revo and the Junk/Evidence Remover cleaners therein and my Registry Cleaner, I still managed to find keys I didn't need. Now, whenever I uninstall a prog I've made it a bit of a habit of checking/going thro' the following procedure :
Make sure you create a Sysem Restore point Open the Registry Editor by typing the following in either "Run.." (WinXP) or in the "Program search field" (Vista/7) in the start menu:-
regedit
And OK it.
You are now in the Registry Editor.
Of the five "drawers" seen, the 2nd and 3rd:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER
and
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
both have Software sub-keys, found by clicking the + on the left of each,
and looking down the lists/keys in each.
Another click on the + to the left of Software and it will drop down again
to reveal further sub-keys.

Whilst you're there, you can look thro' the keys/entries to see if there might be entries
you clearly don't need....if you are 100% sure, you can right click and delete those .Don't delete anything you are not absolutely sure about.
To retract the drop-down list, click on the - sign and to close the Registry Editor, click the
X top right corner.
Be very careful....hope you find the foregoing of help........

The above may help you familiarize yourself if not already reasonably confident.

But all that we need to know is whether or not the User ID is okay....just take a look if you can.........regards.......mogs........

@mogs,

I made some pictures of my screen and of some registry entries. You can find them in
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5knbi2kh4iit6f3/ynTk9Y6...

First I re-installed the PSI 3.0 program and now at startup of the program the same pop up window as in PSI2.0 appears. Please refer to picture startup_screen_psi3.0.jpg.

In the registry I can not found any secunia entry in HKEY_CURRENT_USER.
But I could find an entry which got the subkeys "PSI, PSIInternal and PSIA" you have mentioned in your post.

a) for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Wow6432Node->Secunia ->PSI please refer to picture 01_regedit_psi3.0.jpg

b) for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Wow6432Node->Secunia ->PSIInternal please refer to picture 02_regedit_psi3.0.jpg

c) for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE->SOFTWARE->Wow6432Node->Secunia ->PSIA please refer to picture 03_regedit_psi3.0.jpg

Do you see the source of the problem or do you need more information ?

Best regards

Carlo,
You will not find the unique UserID string in the Registry where @mogs has pointed to. To try & help we need to go over some "old ground". Sorry about that but as previously stated I do not understand some of the help you have been offered to date.

1. There is no evidence to support the suggestion that PSI V 3.0.0.9016 does not work with Windows 7 or any OS for that matter provided the OS is stable. I have numerous Windows 7 users both 32 & 64 Bit hooked up to my SMB Console using this version & they all work flawlessly.

2. What happened to the file you renamed? Please confirm these are the only folders & files for Secunia PSI in Windows Explorer.

https://1ncuig.bn1303.livefilestore.com/y2pQS7iDFb...

3. While you have Windows Explorer open RIGHT click starting with the PSI file & select Properties. It/they should look like this:

https://1ncuig.bn1.livefilestore.com/y2pyeHOibI1Td...

Now do exactly the same on PSI TRAY then PSIA then SUA. Correct any alterations that may have been made to look like my screen shot.

4. If by chance the SUA file has gone missing again it is irrelevant to your problem - in a nutshell if you see this (where the SUA file is missing)PSI will still open & scan.

https://1ncuig.bn1304.livefilestore.com/y2pC-p87id...

5. Go to Start Orb>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Services & check at least this setting is correct.

https://1ncuig.bn1303.livefilestore.com/y2pWbf8B9p...

6. What browser version of IE is installed? Do you have any third party browsers installed as well? If so which browser is set to be your default?

7. As a Pro version user please confirm you have not manually or allowed a third party programme to make any adjustments to Group Policy or Administrative Services?

8. Is this the first time you have used PSI or have you updated from a previous version?

9. Are you trying to run PSI via a proxy?

10. What happens when you click this link using IE? https://psi.secunia.com:443/

11, Finally check your unique User ID is not corrupt or missing. [Currently it looks like a User ID was not created during the install) Details here:

Is it present & correct? Exit the registry via the X in the red box (top right).

Once you confirm that all the above is in order we can run a clean log file to see if that produces any clues.

Carlo,
You will not find the unique UserID string in the Registry where @mogs has pointed to.

The file does not exist anymore. I installed and re-installed the PSI for several times. During these actions the renamed file was deleted.

Please confirm these are the only folders & files for Secunia PSI in Windows Explorer.

In the directory on my system the sub-directory SUA is missing the other files are all existing.

3. While you have Windows Explorer open RIGHT click starting with the PSI file & select Properties. It/they should look like this:

Yes it looks like this.

Now do exactly the same on PSI TRAY then PSIA then SUA. Correct any alterations that may have been made to look like my screen shot.

Yes the remaining programs got the same property entries.

4. If by chance the SUA file has gone missing again it is irrelevant to your problem - in a nutshell if you see this (where the SUA file is missing)PSI will still open & scan.

The SUA file is not missing only the sub-directory SUA.

Yes this setting I also got on my system.

6. What browser version of IE is installed? Do you have any third party browsers installed as well? If so which browser is set to be your default?

It is the IE 11 installed / activated but I'm not using it so far.

I have installed the Firefox 26.0 and this browser is the default.

7. As a Pro version user please confirm you have not manually or allowed a third party programme to make any adjustments to Group Policy or Administrative Services?

I'm not aware that I have allowed it but who knows ?
Is there any possibility to check if a third party program got such a permission ?

8. Is this the first time you have used PSI or have you updated from a previous version?

On this system I installed it for the first time.

9. Are you trying to run PSI via a proxy?

No, I did not.

In the registry on my system the 3 Secunia folders are there:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> SOFTWARE -> Wow6432Node -> Secunia

In the folder PSI Internal there seems to be no USERID please refer to the link

Your answers are perfect - thank you.

1. I am now looking at why the SUA folder is not present & why a Unique User ID is not being installed.

2. Although I do not use Avira from what I have read here it does not look like an issue.

3. While I try to figure it out can you please:

a. Open IE & check that all the settings are like this:

https://1ncuig.bn1.livefilestore.com/y2p8qmiq4rPKi...

b. Check that your default browser is set up correctly:

https://1ncuig.bn1301.livefilestore.com/y2pmIDELB0...

Once complete try yet another reinstall using this link:

http://secunia.com/PSISetup.exe

Just let it run - it will auto uninstall the old before a clean reinstall.

Carlo,
Are you at your PC?

EDIT - I will try & catch up with you tomorrow - I want to give you my email address so that I can send you a link that will hopefully insert a User ID onto your PC.

For privacy reasons I do not want to leave my address on the Forum for longer than necessary.

Carlo,
Thank you - I have deleted the post with the link on.

EDIT

I have sent you an email with a hyperlink. Once you activate it you will see this:

https://1ncuig.bn1.livefilestore.com/y2pLYuyB4DKNV...

Click the link & let it run as normal. It will uninstall your old version & install a new version which HOPEFULLY should give you a new User ID.

Despite what the invitation says I will NOT be able to see anything on your PC because my intention is to deny you access to my Console. In effect that means that if all goes well you are using a User ID to my Console but remain a totally free agent.

Let us hope it works this time.

Maurice,

after the long mail conversation with you we found the cause of problems.

Long time ago I installed the program JuSProg (see: http://www.jugendschutzprogramm.de/)

This is a filter program which I wanted to use to protect my children. With this program my children should be protected to reach bad internet addresses.

This program also seems to prevent the IE for reaching the page https://psi.secunia.com:443/.

Many many thanks to you Maurice for your persistent help and patience.

Best regards,
Carlo
